Cristiano Ronaldo has been banished from Manchester United's first-team squad after refusing to come on as a substitute in their win over Tottenham on Wednesday.

Ronaldo failed to come off the bench in the Premier League match at Old Trafford, which ended in a 2-0 win for United.

Before full-time, the Portuguese superstar could be seen heading down the tunnel.

It was later reported that he left the stadium before the match had finished.

The Daily Mail now claim that Ronaldo refused to come on as a substitute late in the game.

The report claims that Ronaldo was told to go on by Erik ten Hag but refused his manager's instructions before heading for the exit.

Ten Hag said after the match that he would 'deal' with the situation in the morning, with Ronaldo returning to training at Carrington on Thursday.

The Athletic claim Ronaldo has been banished from the first-team squad and will now have to train on his own.

The striker is set to miss Saturday's crucial Premier League match against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Ronaldo's relationship with Ten Hag is said to be at "breaking point", with the player desperate to leave the club in January and the Dutch manager "happy to let him go".

Ronaldo handed in a transfer request during the summer window in an attempt to force through a move to a club competing in the Champions League.

However, a transfer failed to materialise for the Portugal international, who has had to make do with a bit-part role this season under Ten Hag.

Ronaldo has managed just two goals in 12 appearances in all competitions this term.

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel says he was "disappointed" with Ronaldo's behaviour against Spurs.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, Schmeichel said: "It's the first time I can say that I am disappointed with him. Normally I back him, I understand his situation."

Meanwhile, Piers Morgan has accused Ten Hag of disrespecting the five-time Ballon d'Or winner this season.

"The way Ten Hag seems to delight in humiliating Cristiano is pathetic," Morgan said on social media.

"Sticking the world's greatest ever footballer on the bench, making him repeatedly warm up, then not even use him as a sub, is just staggeringly disrespectful to United's top scorer last season."
