Carlos Tevez earned £32 million from 'seven month holiday' in China

Tevez was known as someone who was constantly on the run during his career, but his time in the Chinese Super League wasn't like that

Carlos Tevez spent most of his career being known for his all-action style and determination, but that wasn't the case during his spell in China, where he claimed he was on holiday.

Whether it was at West Ham, Manchester United, Manchester City or Juventus, defenders tended to fear being chased down by Tevez.

The forward had a tenacity about him that made him tough to deal with and he was also able to score a high number of goals, with magnificent quality.

His compilation highlights alongside Wayne Rooney shows just what an incredible tandem they were, and why they led United to a Champions League and Premier League double.

The Argentine star retired nine months ago, hanging up his boots in extremely emotional circumstances, having lost his father to Covid and saying he had no energy to keep playing.

Before ending his time as a footballer, Tevez had returned to Europe to play for Boca Juniors for a second time, to be closer to his family, before bizarrely making the decision to sign for Chinese Super League side Shanghai Shenhua in 2017.

Whilst there, the three times Premier League winner earned £615,000-a-week basic wage for seven months, and reportedly picked up £32 million in total during that time.

However, during his time in the Far East, he annoyed fans of the team after he was spotted in Disneyland whilst his team were playing a league game, whilst he was supposedly injured.

He was also criticised by his manager, Wu Jingui, for being overweight and not in the right condition, but Tevez didn't seem too bothered.

Speaking back in 2018, the former Corinthians forward laughed off the whole affair, claiming it was just a 'holiday.'

"I was on holiday for seven months in China," he joked when questioned on his time there by TyC Sports.

"It's fine for the Shanghai coach and president to criticise me, I didn't know what I was doing there."

He certainly wasn't impressed with his teammates or opponents either. "Chinese footballers are not as naturally skilled like South American or European players… like players who learned football when they were kids," Tevez stated.

"They’re not good. Even in 50 years, they still won’t be able to compete."

Tevez then returned to Boca for a third spell, winning Primera Division on two more occasions, taking his total tally to four titles.

Certainly fans of the South American side will think of him far more fondly than those in Asia, where he was just having a lovely holiday...
