The individual was handcuffed and led away by two police officers outside seafront club The Arch.

He was then remanded in custody for questioning at a local police station, before being released on bail.

Sussex police confirmed a player in his 20s was arrested, along with a friend in his 40s.

A statement from Sussex Police read: "Two men have been arrested after a woman reported being sexually assaulted at a venue in Brighton, in the early hours of Wednesday.

"A man in his forties and a man in his twenties, both from Brighton, were arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and remain in police custody at this time.”

Brighton, meanwhile released their own statement on the matter, writing: “Brighton and Hove Albion are aware that one of its players is assisting police with the investigation of an alleged offence.

"The matter is subject to a legal process and the club is therefore unable to make further comment at this time.”

Brighton have made a strong start to the season under Graham Potter and sit in sixth place, just two points off the top after seven games.

They take on Norwich City in their next Premier League fixture after the international break ends.
