Brandon Williams Says He Felt Christian Eriksen 'Needed A Hug'

Williams clashed with the Brentford midfielder and looked like he was ready to hit his opponent, before realising who it was he was against.

Brandon Williams has explained what he was thinking in the moment he ended up hugging Brentford midfielder Christian Eriksen.

Last weekend, Williams went viral for a video that showed him looking like he was about to hit Eriksen, only to end up embracing his opponent seconds later.

It was just the second time Eriksen was on the pitch since he suffered a cardiac arrest last summer at the Euros, during Denmark's game with Finland, and his first start.

It looked like he would be getting a smack from Williams as a welcome back, but instead ended up in a hug, and the on loan Manchester United full back has now revealed exactly what happened.

"Obviously, it was just a moment that happened, it was just instincts," Williams told Sky Sports.

"I got past him and I felt him pull me down, so we was on the attack and I was really angry.

"I was going to…hold him but I know what he’s been through, and it’s incredible what he’s done, and he’s back now.

"It was something special for him to be on the pitch for himself, and to be involved in that, I felt like he needed a hug.

"It’s something that no player wants to go through, it was amazing that he’s back and he’s a top quality player and I’m sure he’ll be back to his best very soon."

Eriksen was unable to continue playing for Inter Milan following the incident at the Euros, because players can't play with a heart monitor.

The former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder was released by the Italian champions and was free to find a new club, signing for Brentford at the beginning of last month.

He trained with them for several weeks and provided in an assist in a behind closed doors friendly, ahead of his return to action against Newcastle United last month.

The 30-year-old has already targeted a place in Denmark's squad for the World Cup in Qatar this winter, which would be a hell of a turn around.

Speaking on Monday Night Football this week, Teddy Sheringham said that he thought Spurs should have looked to re-sign their former midfielder.

"To be honest, I think it is an absolute masterstroke from Brentford to sign him. He has obviously had his problems, he wanted to get back involved and play regular football," the former Spurs striker said.

"There are a lot of Tottenham fans maybe thinking why aren’t we going in for him if he is back available.

"You saw him playing passes like he did at the weekend, he is a quality player and he could be the difference between Brentford staying up with those little bits of quality that he shows."
