Arsenal could pull off Granit Xhaka swap deal with Mikel Arteta's close friend 'desperate' to sign star

This came out of nowhere.

Arsenal could include Granit Xhaka as part of a swap deal this summer, according to reports.

The 30-year-old has enjoyed an excellent campaign under Mikel Arteta, producing more goals and assists than in the last two seasons combined.

His Arsenal career looked to be over after a public fall-out with fans in 2019. However, the Switzerland international has experienced quite the redemption story, and is now a permanent fixture within the Gunners' midfield.

Although there remains a degree of uncertainty surrounding his future in north London, with Xhaka yet to sign a new contract at the club.

The former Borussia Mönchengladbach player has now been rumoured with a return to Germany, as part of a swap deal for Bayer Leverkusen winger Moussa Diaby.

Xhaka linked with swap deal

Arteta is thought to want to strengthen his options out wide this summer, paying particular attention to his left-hand flank to help ease the burden on Bukayo Saka.

23-year-old French winger Diaby is allegedly a key target for the Gunners boss, having scored 14 goals and provided 11 assists in all competitions this season.

While Xhaka could be used as a bargaining tool in any potential deal, with Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso 'desperate' to sign the midfielder, claim The Mirror.

Arteta's close friendship with Alonso could play a key role in negotiations, as the Bundesliga side consider a 'package deal' involving Diaby.

Arteta is expected to invest in his midfield at the end of the season, as the Spaniard prepares for a hectic Champions League schedule next season

West Ham midfielder Declan Rice has been heavily rumoured with a move to the Emirates, and the 24-year-old's arrival could have a knock-on affect on Xhaka's first-team opportunities, paving the way for his potential exit.
