Arsenal have been handed a major boost in their pursuit of Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia.

Mikel Arteta is in the market for midfield recruits this summer as he prepares for a hectic Champions League schedule next season.

The Spaniard is thought to want to add two midfielders to his ranks, with Lavia one of the many names linked with a move to the Emirates.

The 19-year-old has caught the eye on the south coast since making the switch from Manchester City last summer.

However, despite a series of impressive personal displays, Southampton could be officially relegated if they drop points to Fulham on Saturday.

In turn, Saints are expected to lose a whole host of first-team players including Lavia, with Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea all placed on red alert.

While Romano reckons Premier League clubs need to act quickly if they are to secure the Belgian's services.

What did he say?

Romano mentioned a generous buy-back clause in Lavia's contract which would give Manchester City the edge in signing him. However, the clause does not come into affect this summer.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano said: "But there is a crucial point guys on Romeo Lavia. The clause, the buy-back clause and option for Manchester City is only valid in summer 2024.

"So this is why many clubs will try to attack the situation this summer and to sign the player this summer. Otherwise, City could be back in the race next summer with that very good clause for them."

Romano also confirmed Arsenal's interest in Lavia, believing it is a level playing field in the race for his signature.

"But also Arsenal are following him so the race is absolutely open for Romeo Lavia," he added. "It's one to watch in the summer."
