Arsenal star Martin Odegaard proved his worth to the club as captain both on and off the pitch as his side defeated Newcastle 2-0 at St James' Park on Sunday.

The victory keeps the pressure on Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table, although Guardiola's side still need to drop points in one of their last four games.

And it was Odegaard who led from the front, scoring Arsenal's opening goal of the game to draw level with Gabriel Martinelli as the club's top league goalscorer this season.

The 15 goals the Norwegian has netted is his personal best seasonal tally, and he has also provided seven assists.

His latest strike was certainly an impressive one. Receiving the ball from around 25 yards out, he took a touch before drilling his shot beyond Nick Pope and into the bottom right corner of the net.

If the Gunners do lift their first Premier League title since 2004, Odegaard will have had a big part to play as a result of his performances.

But his captaincy has also been key, having been appointed to the role by manager Mikel Arteta at the beginning of the campaign. And he proved it once again during and after the Newcastle game.

Odegaard proves worth as Arsenal captain

As Arsenal were soaking in what was a hard-earned victory, with Newcastle twice striking the post as they failed to score for the first time in five matches, one supporter decided to call Odegaard on FaceTime.

The call was answered, and Odegaard was serenaded by chants from Arsenal supporters on a train carriage that appears to be heading back to London.

Twitter account @dwyer_eli posted evidence of the interaction, showing Odegaard smiling as he digitally interacted with supporters.

The video comes weeks after the Arsenal squad were criticised for a lack of interaction with a young mascot ahead of their game at West Ham last month.

Odegaard led the mascot out at kick-off, but the backlash was aimed at a video which showed the players not appearing to speak to the girl as they signed her shirt upon arrival at the London Stadium.

However, her father took to Twitter to clarify what had happened: "My daughter had a lovely time as mascot for Arsenal.

"There was only a small window to meet the players and she enjoyed it very much. Odegaard is her favourite player so to hold his hand onto the pitch was very special."
