Arsenal have begun negotiations with Gabriel Martinelli over a new contract at the club, according to reports.

Martinelli has been in fine form for the Gunners this season, playing an important role in their superb start to the campaign. Mikel Arteta's side top the Premier League by four points prior to Wednesday night's fixtures.

The Brazilian was widely praised for his performance in Arsenal's 3-2 win over Liverpool earlier in October. The 22-year-old caused the Reds problems throughout the game on their right side.

Martinelli opened the scoring in the first minute of that match - one of four goals he has scored in the league this season.

Given his form, it makes perfect season for the Gunners to want to extend his deal. They have already reportedly started talks.

Arsenal, Martinelli in negotiations over new contract

The Athletic claim that negotiations have begun on a "revised deal" that would reflect the player's "improved standing as a regular first-team player".

Martinelli's current deal at the club expires in 2024, but Arsenal have a two-year extension option. Therefore, the Brazilian is locked in at the Emirates until 2026. However, The Athletic also add that the Gunners want to reward their players based on form, rather than simply triggering existing extensions.

It is claimed that Martinelli is not the only player that Arteta's side have prioritised as long-term retentions. Bukayo Saka is also in talks over a new deal, with it being reported that he is the most advanced out of the trio of Martinelli, himself and William Saliba when it comes to agreeing a new contract.

Martinelli has been subject to praise throughout the season, with Joe Cole telling BT Sport earlier this month: "Outstanding footballer. I've loved him from the moment I laid eyes on him.

"He reminds me of an Alexis Sanchez, a [Luis] Suarez type. He's exceptional with the ball going forward.

"He's got a low centre of gravity, he's got a great technique. He affects the game. He looks to have a great attitude."

Gunners legend Martin Keown, meanwhile, described Martinelli as a player going "to the next level".

The Brazilian is set for a bright future - and Arsenal fans will hope it will be with them,
