Lando Norris’ Six-Word Remark After Mexico GP Pole Proves Key Oscar Piastri Difference

Norris qualified on pole for the Mexico City Grand Prix, with Piastri down in seventh.

Lando Norris inadvertently explained the key pace difference between himself and McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri after qualifying for the Mexico City Grand Prix.

Norris will start the race on pole position, having set a lap over three tenths quicker than second-placed Charles Leclerc.

Leclerc set the fastest time on the initial Q3 runs, but the Brit set two purple sectors on his final lap to pull clear of the Ferrari driver and secure pole position.

Lewis Hamilton will start the race in third place at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, with championship hopeful Max Verstappen down in fifth.

It was another disappointing session for Drivers' Championship leader Piastri, who followed up his fifth place start at the United States Grand Prix last weekend with seventh in Mexico.

The Australian set the eighth-fastest time in qualifying, but was promoted a place due to Carlos Sainz's five-place grid penalty which carried over from Austin.

Piastri did not look particularly at ease with the handling of his McLaren car, and also complained of power application issues out of turn five in Q2.

It was the complete opposite for Norris, who produced a near-perfect qualifying lap to secure a deserved pole position.

Speaking to F1TV after the session, the McLaren driver explained why his lap was so fast - and underlined the problem that Piastri is up against.

He said: "I think all of my laps were pretty damn good, to be honest. Maybe my Q3 run one was the one where Charles was ahead, and I got a little bit worried.

"But I just pushed one, two per cent more on my final lap, and everything came together. It wasn't like it was a perfect lap... maybe it was, I don't know!"

He continued: "It was just one of their laps where you're not really thinking about every corner.

"You're just in the subconscious phase. You're just letting your body, your mind, take over. It was a nice thing to see when I saw the 15.5 on the dash coming over the line. It's a nice feeling."

Piastri will have hoped to have been able to say the same thing in regards to the subconscious, but had to apply a number of corrections in the corners across the near 75-second lap.

Although the Australian described his lack of qualifying pace as 'a mystery', McLaren team principal Andrea Stella noted what he believes to be the key reason behind why he has been consistently slower than Norris across the last two race weekends thus far.

"When you have conditions like here, and to some extent Austin, with hot tarmac, sliding tyres, and the way in which you generate lap time is a way that, I would say, comes relatively naturally for Lando and less naturally for Oscar," he told reporters (via Autosport).

"You know, Lando is the driver of going on low grip: end of the stint, when the tyres are quite worn, used, the grip is low, is where we see Lando doing green sector, green sector, green sector."

Piastri will hope that he and his team have been able to settle on the perfect solution to his lack of pace before the Grand Prix, in order to enable him to maintain his lead in the Drivers' Championship.
