2026 F1 Rules and Regulations Explained as Most Likely Teams to Benefit Revealed

The 2026 Formula 1 season is set to be a classic.

The 2026 Formula 1 season promises to be a classic, with the sport set to undergo a huge regulation change.

Last weekend, the 2025 campaign came to a close, with Lando Norris winning his first world championship.

The 26-year-old ended the season two points ahead of Max Verstappen, who saw his four-year reign ended by Norris and McLaren.

Looking ahead, F1 will look completely different in 2026, with Cadillac becoming the 11th team on the grid, meaning the total number of cars will increase to 22.

In addition, the technical regulations will be overhauled with changes to the power unit, chassis and aerodynamic rules.

What are the new F1 regulations in 2026?

From next year onwards, F1 cars are set to be more agile, which should, in turn, produce better battles on track.

The power unit is also set to be redesigned, with more focus on battery power and the use of advanced sustainable fuels.

Furthermore, there will be new active aerodynamics in the form of movable front and wear rings, brought in to promote closer on-track action.

The safety aspect is also set to be improved with stronger structures and tougher tests.

What is changing to the power units?

In 2026, the power units will deliver more power via the electrical component.

While the power from the hybrid unit has dropped from around 550-560kw to 400kw, the battery power has increased from 120kw to 350kw, which is almost an increase of 300%.

Through making major changes to the power units, F1 have managed to entice Honda to make a return, with the likes of Audi and Ford joining the sport, with the latter joining forces with Red Bull Powertrains.

What is happening to DRS in 2026?

Over the last few years, we have been accustomed to DRS having a major role in on-track battles.

However, in 2026, there will no longer be DRS available to the drivers.

Instead, DRS will be replaced by the Manual Override Mode, which is designed to provide a temporary boost in hybrid power.

The 2026 cars are set to have two modes at all times, Z-mode and X-mode.

When a car is in Z-mode, the front and rear wings will be closed, generating more downforce for the corners.

With X-mode activated, the front and rear wings will open to reduce drag and increase speed.

Similar to the DRS, the X-mode will likely only be allowed when a car is within one second of the one in front and in certain sections of the track.

Who could benefit most from the F1 regulation changes?

With the power units set to play a big part, Mercedes will naturally be the frontrunners as they have produced championship-winning engines over the last couple of years as McLaren's supplier.

Mercedes star George Russell also expressed the team's confidence ahead of 2026.

He said earlier this year: "I mean, ordinarily, 2026 seems like a long time away, but in the world of Formula 1 it’s going to be here tomorrow, and the team are feeling really confident for this era.

"I think you know the experience the team have had, the success in 2014 with the new powertrain, and then obviously the time in Formula E, the work that was done with the [Mercedes-AMG ONE] Hypercar. There are a lot of individuals within HPP [Mercedes High Performance Powertrains] who have got so much experience with this future technology."

Russell continued: "I think that leaves us in a really great place to have a great engine. And the work [Mercedes fuel and lubricant partner] Petronas are doing on the fuel as well is looking really strong. So, on the engine side, I think we’re feeling very confident for that era."

What have F1 drivers said?

Williams star Alex Albon said: "Look at Formula E as a more extreme version as to where we're going to go to. You can see how the drivers manipulate the racing and qualifying and how they deploy and all these kind of things to gain performance.

"It's not going to be that extreme, but there will be an element of the drivers who have the brain capacity to understand and facilitate all these demands will go well."

Russell added: "I think you will see more overtakes next year, but more overtakes in obscure locations - in locations where we've never seen overtakes before.

"If a driver's at the bottom of their battery, and the one behind has more battery, in a given section of the track, they can suddenly jump past them at a corner in the past where there would never be an overtake. In terms of override itself, we said in the past we never like to see just pure DRS overtakes. I think the 2026 regs will offer better racing."
