Carlos Sainz slams Liam Lawson and stewards in furious radio message after Dutch GP incident

Sainz branded it the "most ridiculous" decision of his F1 career

Carlos Sainz slammed the F1 stewards and Liam Lawson after being handed the "most ridiculous" penalty of his career during the Dutch Grand Prix.

Williams driver Sainz started from ninth on the grid and looked set to move up after Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton crashed early in the race.

But on lap 27, Sainz was involved in a disastrous collision with Racing Bulls' Liam Lawson in the wet conditions at Zandvoort.

The pair came together on the exit of turn one, causing substantial damage to both cars - prompting the virtual safety car to be deployed with debris on the track.

Sainz reacted with fury, blaming Lawson for the incident in a radio message to the Williams garage.

"He's just so stupid. Oh my god. This guy, it's always the same guy," said Sainz.

However, after reviewing footage of the incident, the stewards decided that it was in fact Sainz at fault for the collision - handing him a 10-second penalty.

That predictably infuriated the Spanish driver, who described it as "ridiculous" in another heated radio message.

"Who? Who gets a penalty? Me? You are joking. You are joking. It is the most ridiculous decision of my life," he said.

Williams team principal James Vowles later told Sky Sports he believed the collision was a normal 'racing incident'.

Sainz would eventually finish the race in 14th position, one place behind Lawson.

Oscar Piastri extended his lead at the top of the championship with victory ahead of second place Max Verstappen and an impressive third place finish for Racing Bulls' Isack Hadjar - his first podium in F1.

It was a disastrous race for Lando Norris, however, who was forced to retire six laps from the finish due to engine problems.

Speaking after his win, Piastri said: "It is a pretty hard act to follow Isack up here but I'll try my best. I felt in control from Lap 1 and used the pace when I needed to, but sorry for Lando.

"The start of the weekend looked like a difficult one, got it together in Qualifying and very happy with this one. A couple of Safety Cars to spice it up. It was a big team effort.

"There's a long way to go, so we'll keep going, one race at a time."

Norris is now 34 points behind Piastri in the driver standings with just nine races remaining in the 2025 calendar.

The British driver will need to bounce back quickly, with the Italian Grand Prix taking place at Monza next weekend.
