A World Cup-winning cricket legend is locked up in an 'insect-infested death cell' and is subjected to 'mental torture'.

Imran Khan enjoyed a legendary career with Pakistan, famously winning the ICC Cricket World Cup in 1992.

He starred in both formats of the game, making 88 Test and 172 ODI appearances.

Khan, who captained Pakistan, scored over 3,000 runs in both formats and took 362 Test wickets, averaging an impressive 22.81.

After calling time on his career, Khan moved into politics, eventually becoming Prime Minister of Pakistan from 2018 to 2022.

But things turned for the worse when he was sentenced to 14 years in jail over alleged corruption 11 months ago.

The 73-year-old was found guilty of misusing his premiership to buy and sell state gifts received abroad, valued over 140 million rupees (£1.2 million).

Khan finds himself behind bars and is locked up in solitary confinement at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, Pakistan.

His cell contains an insect infestation, poor ventilation and sickening smells, according to a United Nations report.

Khan, who spends 23 hours a day by himself, had a rare visit from his sister, Uzman Khanun, this year and she spoke out on the 'mental torture' he faces from his windowless cell.

"He’s physically well. However, he said that they are subjecting him to mental torture, and that Asim Munir [Pakistan’s chief of army staff] is responsible for all of this," she said.

"He’s kept inside all the time, and only goes out for a short while. There’s no contact with anybody."

Khan himself has complained about the conditions in his cell, claiming it is unfit for 'any human being'.

"I am enduring the harshest prison term in the country’s history," he wrote on X this year.

"The level of oppression and authoritarianism is such that even the water I have for ablution is filthy and contaminated with dirt, unfit for any human being.

"I have spent countless hours re-reading the same old books, but now even those are no longer available.

"Despite repeated requests, I have not been allowed to speak to my children. Political meetings have also been restricted; I am only permitted to meet certain “choice individuals”, while all other interactions are barred.”
