A former Top Gear host has slammed the show after Freddie Flintoff suffered a horrible injury whilst filming the new series.

Last year, cricket legend Flintoff was involved in a life-threatening accident at the Dunsfold Aerodrome.

He was taken to hospital after suffering broken ribs and facial injuries. Earlier in the month, Flintoff was seen in public for the first time since his accident as he watched England play New Zealand.

The 45-year-old was pictured with the team on the grass dressed in England uniform.

After his horror incident, it has been reported that Flintoff feels unable to continue on the show.

Now, former Top Gear host Steve Berry has slammed the show whilst speaking to GB News.

Berry, who hosted the show from 1993 to 1996 said: “The difference back when I did it was they used to appoint motoring journalists. I was completely aware of the dangers that could often occur. I was under no illusion.

“The problem for me with the modern Top Gear is you’re asking a cricketer to do things that really should be done by people who know what they’re doing. But it’s the viewer that’s the problem.”

Currently, Flintoff is joined by comedian Paddy McGuiness and motoring journalist, Chris Harris on the show.

Speaking about Flintoff’s accident, his ex-teammate Steve Harrison said: “It’s been tough, you’ve seen the pictures of him with a smile on his face but I saw him about six weeks ago when my son Charlie and his son, Rocky played against each other and it was great to see him.

“Obviously I roomed with Andrew for the best part of 15 years and we’d gone through all our careers together and so to see our two sons playing each other, Northumberland against Lancashire, it was fantastic.”

Harrison added: “I got to see him then but at that time he covered his face up when he walked around – believe it or not, he was training a guide dog, which I’m sure is going better now than it was because he tripped over around three times on his way around the field!”

The BBC declined to comment on Berry's remarks.
