Scott Morrison Hilariously Trolled For Message To Ash Barty Following Her Retirement

The Prime Minister seemed to bend a bit of the detail in his message to the recently retired star.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has been hilariously trolled for his message to Ash Barty in the wake of her decision to retire from tennis.

The PM was one of many sending through their congratulations to the 25-year-old, who announced her retirement via Instagram on Wednesday.

On Twitter, Mr Morrison said: "Great to speak with Ash Barty today and simply say, 'Thank you, Ash'.

"Thank you for inspiring a nation. You are all class. Your achievements will be celebrated for all time.

"On behalf of all Australians, all the best to you and your fiancé Garry for your wedding and new life together."

However, the congratulatory remarks seemed to be bending a bit of detail as reported by ABC News on Wednesday (March 23) afternoon.

According to ABC News, Barty hadn't actually picked up or returned the Prime Minister's call, with the insincerity of Morrison's tweet sparking some savage replies on Twitter.

In particular, the phrasing of the word "speak" caught the ire of users.

Former politician Cheryl Kernot said: "ABC News reported that she didn't answer so you left a message?? Is that actually 'speaking' with her?? Slippery if true."

Another user said: "Scott supposedly spoke with Shane Warne just before he died, and he also claimed to speak with Ash Barty earlier today. If you leave a voicemail, you speak 'to' a person on the other end, not 'with' them."

Confidence in Morrison's genuineness and honesty has certainly been lost over the years, with this tweet sparking further outrage.

One user tweeted: "Scott supposedly spoke with Shane Warne just before he died, and he also claimed to speak with Ash Barty earlier today. If you leave a voicemail, you speak 'to' a person on the other end, not 'with' them."

Others accused Morrison of yet again attempting to deflect from the current flood crisis happening in Australia.

One user said: "Just reminding you where Lismore is."

Another tweeting: "Wondered how long it would take you to get some mileage out of someone else's announcement. Pity we can't thank you for inspiring anyone or actually working for the country."

A wealth of support has flown in for Barty since she made her retirement announcement while ranked as the number one tennis player in the world.

You can only imagine the calls and messages she's been fielding since, and for poor Scotty, it seems he simply doesn't make the cut.
