Usain Bolt has made his feelings clear on Oblique Seville taking his world record after insane 100m race in near-impossible conditions

Seville continues to make waves in the athletics world.

Usain Bolt has already given his take on whether Oblique Seville can break his 100m world record as the gifted Jamaican sprinter continues to shine on the world stage.

Seville made headlines again on Wednesday after beating Olympic champion Noah Lyles in a rain-soaked 100m final at the World Athletics Diamond League in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Having made a strong start to proceedings, Seville battled torrential conditions to record an impressive time of 9.87 seconds, despite the -0.3m/s headwind.

Speaking after the race, he said: "Yeah, I'm back, but to be honest, in these conditions, it's very difficult even to run that fast, and to come out here and I'm the only person who managed to show my dominance."

Seville also recorded a win over Lyles at the Racers Grand Prix in June 2024, clocking a time of 9.82 seconds.

Usain Bolt believes Seville has what it takes to break his 100m world record

Earlier this year, Bolt named Seville as the athlete he believes can finally smash his 100m world record.

Bolt holds the world record in the 100m after breaking it a total of three times. He first set the world record in May 2008 with a time of 9.72 seconds, taking the fastest time of 9.74 seconds away from Asafa Powell.

He then set a new record at Beijing 2008 with his gold medal-winning time of 9.69 seconds.

And a short time later, Bolt set the current world record at the 2009 World Athletics Championships in Berlin with a time of 9.58 seconds; an achievement he believes Seville could trump in the coming years.

"I feel like Oblique can do it. If he can stay fit during the season and get it right, I feel he can do it, because I am sure there is something there, the ability to do it," Bolt said on The Fix Podcast, as per the Olympics website.

"Some of the time Oblique can be fragile. It’s a matter of the work situation or whatever, but if he’s doing enough work, he can do it.

"It’s a matter of time because he’s not missed the finals yet, so it’s just to get over the hump."

Bolt added: "He’s the master and he just needs to find the right season, stay clean and do the right thing, and if the coach believes him and the coach says. It’s just that he needs to put it all together."

Scientists on whether Usain Bolt's 100m world record will ever be broken

Back in 2022, scientists Polly McGuigan and Aki Salo theorised that Bolt's record could be broken in the future, and believe that a 100m time of under nine seconds may be possible to achieve.

"A combination of genetics and training would need to produce bum, thigh and calf muscles which are a little bit stronger and faster than the current best sprinters," their findings read.

"A muscle with a high proportion of large, fast twitch muscle fibres will be able to generate larger amounts of force more quickly than a muscle with a lower proportion."

They added: "It's safe to say that someone will break the nine second barrier - not necessarily in our lifetime, but it will happen one day."
