Speed must meet three strict requirements before he can enter qualifying for 2028 Olympics in LA

Speed has decided he wants to attempt to qualify for the Olympics - but there is strict criteria he must meet first.

YouTube and Twitch star iShowSpeed has declared that he wants to compete at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles - but he will have to meet three strict requirements to even enter qualifying.

Speed took on 100 metre Olympic champion Noah Lyles over 50 metres earlier this month, with the winner receiving $100,000.

Lyles secured the victory, but not by as significant a margin as fans may have predicted.

As a result, Speed declared during a live event on Sunday that he would compete at the Olympics over 100 and 200 metres.

While Speed is only 19, his run over 50 metres would normally see the lowest difference between an elite sprinter and a normal runner, with the last 50 metres being where Lyles and co would charge away from the average person.

Another major issue for the American is that he would have to qualify for both the 100 and 200 metre trial - through the infamously competitive US Olympic trials.

Only the top three runners in the country make it into the Olympics over each distance, and the qualification time for the 100 metres for Paris 2024 was a stunning 9.88 seconds.

To put that into perspective, running that time would have secured seventh place in the final itself.

But should Speed decide to move forward with his ambitions, he would have to fulfil three strict requirements set by the USA Track and Field committee.

There are only two requirements still to be met, with one of the criteria being that competitors must be a US citizen and meet the eligibility requirements.

Speed also must be a USA Track and Field member in the year of the Olympics to enter the trials.

But the third criteria is far less straightforward. Competitors can only qualify for the trials with their marks from indoor and outdoor competitions, meaning Speed will have to run satisfactory times in the allotted time period in order to reach the trials ahead of other competitors.

That also means he will have to run in sanctioned competitions, with those times going on to his official record.

The 2028 Olympics takes place in Los Angeles and is scheduled to take place between 14-30 July 2028.
