Usain Bolt 'Ready' to Compete at 2028 Olympic Games in LA

The eight-time Olympic gold medallist has not competed since retiring one year after the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Usain Bolt has teased a potential return at the 2028 LA Olympic Games despite retiring from athletics in 2017.

Bolt, 39, remains the fastest man ever to run the 100 and 200 metre races with the Jamaican setting both world records – 9.58 seconds and 19.19 seconds - at the 2009 IAAF World Athletics Championships in Berlin, Germany.

The Jamaican is also the most decorated sprinter to ever lace up the spikes, having won the 100 and 200 metre golds at three consecutive Olympic Games – at Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016 – before he called time on what was an illustrious career following the 2017 World Championships in London.

Bolt finished his career with eight Olympic gold medals, but actually won nine before one was stripped due to his Beijing 2008 4x100m teammate Nesta Carter testing positive for the prohibited substance methylhexanamine when tests were re-analysed in 2017.

Almost a decade on from Bolt’s retirement, top-class sprinters such as Noah Lyles and Fred Kerley have come closest but still ultimately failed to run faster than the great Jamaican.

And with the next Olympics set to take place in Los Angeles in 2028, Lyles and Co will once more try to become the fastest sprinter of all time.

However, could Bolt make an unlikely appearance at the Games?

In a recent interview with Esquire, the 39-year-old admitted that being called the ‘World’s Fastest Man’ “will never get old” before jokingly suggesting he could compete at the 2028 LA Games.

When asked whether he would consider a swansong with the Jamaican cricket squad, Bolt said: “I am happily retired from professional sport. I haven’t played cricket in a long time, but if they call, I will be ready!”

T20 cricket will feature in LA after the sport’s 128-year hiatus from the event. A six-team tournament, split into two groups of three, will take place for both genders, with each team playing each other once.

Results from the four contests will then be used to determine the final rankings, with the top two sides playing in a final to decide the gold and silver medallists while third and fourth will play for bronze.
