Thomas Tuchel hints at Chelsea making one more defensive signing amid Wesley Fofana interest

Thomas Tuchel has hinted at making a defensive signing before the end of the summer amid Chelsea’s interest in Wesley Fofana.

The 21-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to Stamford Bridge from Leicester City, with Kalidou Koulibaly already arriving this summer.

Chelsea have already seen two bids turned down for the Frenchman, who could still join the Blues by the end of the summer.

Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers has recently revealed why his side rejected the initial bid from Chelsea.

“At this moment in time the club is in a very strong position with very talented players and we’ve got players on good contracts already, and the club don’t need to sell our biggest assets. I’m pretty calm on that side,” he said.

Chelsea are set to test the resolve of Leicester and up their bid if reports are to be believed, with Marc Cucurella the most recent signing for Tuchel.

The head coach has now hinted at the signing of another defender, with Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen departing in the summer on free transfers, while Marcos Alonso is set for a move to Barcelona in the coming days.

Speaking to the press, as quoted by football.london, Tuchel hinted at the incoming of a defensive player amid Chelsea’s interest in Fofana.

Speaking on his new signings, Tuchel said: “Marc can play in a back three on the left, Kalidou can play on the left of a three.

"Thiago Silva, who is not Benjamin Button and not getting younger, unfortunately, even though sometimes it seems like it. 

“Maybe we bring one more player, maybe not.

"Still, we have Malang Sarr with us and Ethan Ampadu still with us. 

“We have options but at the same time, we know how many games are coming.

"So let's see if we can still maybe sign a player."

There is no doubt that Chelsea will continue to test Leicester’s resolve regarding Fofana, with the Foxes adamant that they will keep the 21-year-old.

However, a high enough bid could see the Premier League side tempted into a sale, with Chelsea handed a boost as James Maddison appears to be staying at the club, meaning that they are more likely to allow Fofana to leave if reports are to be believed.

It remains to be seen as to whether the Blues will be successful in their pursuit, with the Premier League season underway and time running out to finalise their transfer business this summer.
