Talented Chelsea Goalkeeper Departs On Loan For 2022/23 Season

Talented Chelsea Goalkeeper Departs On Loan For 2022/23 Season

The loan army contingent begins.

Lucas Bergström has left Chelsea and joined Peterborough United on a season-long loan for the 2022/23 season.

The 19-year-old joins the League One outfit for the upcoming campaign and will link up with the Posh side on 22 June when they return for pre-season.

Bergström is highly-rated within the Chelsea academy but will now be given first-team senior experience.

The move comes as no surprise with the Blues on the verge of signing Eddie Beach from Southampton, who will go straight into the Development side, while also the arrival of Gabriel Slonina from Chicago Fire is expected. However, he will remain with the MLS side until the end of the season.

Peterborough United boss Grant McCann was delighted with the acquisition of Bergström, offering high praise to Chelsea for allowing a loan deal.

"Lucas is very highly-rated at Chelsea. He is commanding, a very good shot-stopper and extremely aggressive from crosses and good with his feet. I must give huge thanks to Carlo Cudicini and Chelsea for trusting us in developing Lucas further and we can’t wait to work with him."

Kepa Arrizabalaga could also leave Chelsea this summer. Lazio have shown interest in the Spain international.

Edouard Mendy is the number one and Thomas Tuchel will hold talks with the 27-year-old over what his future holds in west London.

"It depends what he wants and it depends what his plans are, but I know that we are very privileged to have Edou (Mendy) and Kepa in our squad," the Chelsea head coach admitted at the end of last season.

"I know for sure that Kepa is not happy about the situation and he deserves to play more and he can be a strong number one.

"He arrived as a number one goalkeeper so the situation is not easy.

"I can tell you that he is a fantastic team player since day one and always was and never let anybody down. So no, we did not have this conversation.

"I know the goalkeepers coaches have these conversations at the moment and then we will take our time to speak with him, reflect what’s best, what the possibilities are and I’m, of course as a coach, super happy to have both strong goalkeepers. Let’s see."

Kepa's deal expires in 2025 after penning a long-term deal following his arrival from Athletic Bilbao.

Chelsea are yet to make any new additions but have an array of targets. Lazio goalkeeper Lazio goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha has been mentioned and recently admitted it would be a dream to make the switch to England.

"I’m really honoured to be linked with a top club Chelsea, it’s a dream. I’m dreaming of Premier League since I was a kid."
