Chelsea 1-1 Man Utd: Casemiro steals last-gasp draw to cancel out late Jorginho penalty

Chelsea 1-1 Man Utd: Casemiro steals last-gasp draw to cancel out late Jorginho penalty

Chelsea maintained their unbeaten run under Graham Potter with a draw against Manchester United.

Chelsea were denied a win in stoppage time as Manchester United levelled through Casemiro to seal a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening.

It sees Chelsea maintain their position in fourth, with the unbeaten start also continuing, however Chelsea will see it as two dropped points.

The hosts started poorly, giving up possession far too easily and allowing the Red Devils to take control early into proceedings.

Chances fell the way of Marcus Rashford and Antony in the first half but were dealt with by Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Before going into half-time, Graham Potter made his first change of the match, bringing on Mateo Kovacic for Marc Cucurella to change the shape from a back five.

The Blues were improved at the end of the first half, but into the second half both sides were still struggling to find a breakthrough.

Trevoh Chalobah came very close, his header skimmed off the top of the cross-bar as he nearly gave Chelsea the advantage.

The drama however was not over, in the 84th minute substitute Armando Broja was hauled down by Scott Mctominay and a penalty was awarded.

Jorginho held his nerve and calmly tucked away from 12 yards out. It all looked to be over at Stamford Bridge, but there was one last twist, Casemiro's header marginally crossed the line to rescue a point for United.

There were a total of four changes from the midweek draw against Brentford.

As well as not having Reece James (knee), Wesley Fofana (knee) or N'Golo Kante (hamstring) available, the Blues also had to deal without Kalidou Koulibaly, who picked up a knock to his knee.

Raheem Sterling, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Jorginho and Thiago Silva all returned to the starting line-up for Chelsea.

It took a little while for the two teams to get going at Stamford Bridge following the referee's whistle, but the first chance of the match fell the way of the visitors.

Antony hit a curling effort that the in-form Kepa managed to parry behind for a corner relatively comfortably.

The Blues looked to fire back straight away, but a cross from Raheem Sterling was snuffed out by Lisandro Martinez.

This was all Chelsea managed to create early on and it was a very lacklustre start from the hosts, it was instead Manchester United who took a hold of matters.

Individual errors were damaging the west London side's momentum, and they were struggling to get up the pitch.

In the 27th minute, things looked to have opened up for Rashford, but Kepa was sharply out to smother his effort.

A few minutes later the English forward was once again denied by the Spanish keeper, who was up to make another save from Jadon Sancho in the next phase of the attack.

After just 36 minutes, Potter decided it was time for a change of shape, Chelsea were getting overrun in the midfield so Kovacic came on to replace Cucurella.

There was a positive impact from the early substitution, the Blues looked so much brighter following the introduction of the Croatian.

Some opportunities fell the way of Aubameyang, but he failed to make the most of them.

In the closing moments of the half the best chance of the game fell to Antony, but he blasted his shot wide at the near post.

As the first half ended, Potter knew that he needed a huge improvement from his side if they were going to get a result from this game.

Earlier on in the second half, there was little created by either side, the west London side looked the more dangerous but were not crafting any real opportunities.

As the game dragged on, both sides were struggling and were extremely wasteful when getting forwards.

It had become a rather scrappy affair, but in the 73rd minute Chalobah came so close to putting Chelsea in front.

Just before Christian Pulisic was introduced as a substitute for Aubameyang, the centre-back's header clipped the bar and went over.

The visitors came forward soon after, once again though Kepa was down to this time deny Bruno Fernandes.

Chelsea made another two changes after this, bringing on Armando Broja and Carney Chukwuemeka.

It is fair to say Broja had a positive impact, despite the game looking like it was going to end how it had begun, Mctominay pulled over the Albanian in the box and the Blues had a penalty.

Italian midfielder Jorginho stepped up and slotted away into the corner in the 87th minute.

In the 94th minute though, Casemiro's looping header was nearly clawed out by Kepa but just crossed the line. While Chelsea arguably did not deserve all three points, they will feel harshly done by after that last-gasp equaliser.
