Seven WWE wrestlers have reportedly been axed by the promotion ahead of the biggest event of the year.

Last weekend, the WWE held one of the biggest events of their calendar, the Royal Rumble, showcasing 30 of the best men and women currently working for the organisation.

However, the Royal Rumble is just one part of the buildup to the biggest wrestling event of the year, Wrestlemania.

But ahead of the massive card in April, the WWE have decided to part ways with seven wrestling stars as part of a brutal roster cut.

On Tuesday, former NXT Tag Team Champion Duke Hudson took to social media to confirm that he had been 'fired' by the WWE, but teased it wasn't the end of his wrestling career.

But it has now been reported that the Australian was just the first of several wrestlers that have been told that they will no longer be competing in the WWE.

According to Forbes, ahead of Friday's live broadcast of Smackdown, Sonya Deville, Cedric Alexander, Akam and Rezar (aka AOP), Blair Davenport, and Paul Ellering were all informed that their time in the premier wrestling organisation was over.

Like Hudson, Alexander took to social media to confirm the news himself, acknowledging that, as per his WWE contract, he will have to wait at least 90 days until he can join another organisation.

The remaining five wrestlers are yet to acknowledge the reports or confirm their future plans, but several outlets have now confirmed that the news is unfortunately true.

Fightful News confirmed the news about Deville, adding that she hasn't been released, but instead has been told that her contract will not be renewed once it expires in a few weeks.

Because of this, unlike Alexander, Deville will immediately become a free agent, meaning fans may not need to wait too long before seeing her in the ring again as she could sign with another organisation right away.

It's possible that as Wrestlemania 41 gets closer, that the WWE roster could change even more, meaning those competing between now and April will have to show their worth to Triple H and other WWE officials ahead of any other potential cuts.
