John Cena stepped in to pay WWE superstars' $100,000 fine after they went completely off-script during live broadcast

The WWE icon performed a selfless act for some of his lesser-known peers.

WWE legend John Cena once paid several huge fines for his fellow superstars after they were ‘threatened with release’.

Cena, 48, is one of the most well-liked WWE athletes of all time, having worked for the franchise since 2001.

And he often voices his appreciation to fans and is widely considered a fan favourite.

However, he is also hugely popular among his peers, especially those he covered a hefty fine for after they ‘went off-script’ during a match.

In 2022, ex-WWE superstar Aiden English – also known as Matthew Rehwoldt – took part in a ‘dark match’ with five other wrestlers and a referee, who even joined in with the action.

During the contest, those involved started a ‘super kick’ party, with The Usos particularly enjoying the match and delivering blows to their opponents.

Fans in attendance were overjoyed and greeted the WWE superstars with applause and cheers as they went backstage.

Usually, ‘dark matches’ happen either before or after TV broadcasts, allowing superstars the opportunity to improvise and go off script.

According to Matthew Rehwoldt, the WWE stars were met with furious producers backstage and were slated for their antics in the ring.

Speaking on his YouTube channel in 2020, Matt revealed: “We get backstage and we get chewed a new one, Vince McMahon wasn’t there, Triple H wasn’t there, but the producers, the TR [Talent Relations] people.

"[They said] ‘That’s not how you do it. You buried yourselves out there, you buried the business, you made us look like'… all this and that, people are not gonna like this.”

He added: “We got threatened with release, gigantic fines… 10 thousand, 20 thousand dollar fines. All this stuff.”

Rehwoldt later took to X and revealed that “John Cena apparently paid our fine”.

And this wasn’t the first time Cena had made a touching gesture for others.

In 2022, Cena set a new record when he granted the most wishes through the Make-A-Wish foundation, coming in at 650.

Speaking after fulfilling his 500th wish in 2015, Cena said: "I can't say enough how cool it is to see the kids so happy, and their families so happy, I truly want to show them that it's their day.

"I just drop everything. I don't care what I'm doing."
