Khabib Nurmagomedov has blasted Conor McGregor and questioned the UFC's decision to book a rematch between them.

McGregor made a sensational return to the Octagon with a 40 second victory over Donald Cerrone, and his win has earned him a shot at UFC gold.

Dana White has declared that the Irishman is in line to rematch Nurmagomedov, whose pulled no punches in his assessment of UFC's plan and his arch rival's UFC 246 performance.

"People started talking about the rematch. Even though Cerrone lost 7 of his last 10 fights. A guy fights 10 times, and losses 7 of them (grinningly), and they call him a world class fighter, a legend. Okay, let him be a legend. But he was done a long time ago," he said via MMA Rus Context.

"Maybe it was harsh, but it was accurate. I've just foresaw it. How properly they (UFC) played it. How properly they chose the opponent.

"People gasped, why? Because 90% of the people who watch MMA, doesn't understand the sport, they just watch it," he added. "They know their (athletes) names and that's it.

"We're talking about the title contenders. A guy who will fight for the title. There are other fighters proving themselves again and again with their performances, with their wins. They are the contenders.

"But they (UFC and Conor) took the other road. They took the way, that is understandable for the people, but not understandable for the experts."

When a theoretical purse of $100 million was proposed, 'The Eagle' said: "Why do I need that kind of money, there are so many organizations for example (gestures to the room)... There's not only football for the blind, there's Sambo and other sports.

"Let [the UFC] give it to them, if they don't know what to do with the money. But giving me $100m to beat up that idiot again? I don't think that's rational."

Nurmagomedov returns to action in April when he defends his UFC lightweight title against Tony Ferguson at UFC 249 in April.

And if he beats Ferguson, the undefeated Russian is expected to rematch McGregor in late 2020.

However, Nurmagomedov's manager Ali Abdelaziz does not want to make it easy for McGregor to get another shot at the 155lbs title, despite the promotion's intentions.

"All this talking - it doesn't make sense. We have to beat Tony," he said. "Conor can say whatever he wants, but my advice to Conor: 'Hey (expletive), go fight Justin Gaethje. Get a win, and after that come back for a title shot.' That's it.

"After Tony, the ranking says Justin Gaethje. But in the meantime, if Conor thinks he's next for the shot, he should fight Justin Gaethje."

Does McGregor deserve another crack at Nurmagomedov? Let us know.
