Khabib Nurmagomedov could follow in Conor McGregor's footsteps and take on Floyd Mayweather in a boxing bout, according to the Russian's dad.

The UFC champion may make a switch to boxing to take on undefeated American Mayweather after his dad seemed to give it the go ahead on Instagram.

Khabib, 31, has dominated the UFC lightweight division and could look outside the octagon for his next challenge, like McGregor did when he fought Mayweather in August 2017.

He is due to fight Tony Ferguson in March or April next year as he looks to extend his perfect MMA record to 29-0.

And Khabib's dad Abdulmanap said on social media that he is open to explore a potential Mayweather bout after that contest.

Abdulmanap posted a picture on Instagram of Mayweather and Khabib with the caption: "Floyd, I respect your wish to fight Khabib.

"At the moment we have our most crucial moment, when he have to hold the best fight in the history of the UFC.

"Twelve against 12 in a series of victories (in the UFC) and all the fans are waiting for this fight.

"We've been preparing for this fight for more than a year. Five months and the fight (with Ferguson) should take place.

"First of all we will need to do some boxing training and we need a camp - with Lomachenko Sr for half a year. Why not!!!"

Khabib's manager Ali Abdelaziz told TMZ Sports this summer that Mayweather has been "begging" for the fight and is "running out of money".

He said: "Floyd Mayweather to this day keeps begging to fight Khabib, begging!

"Floyd's running out of money. I'm telling you, people reaching out to me every week about Floyd to fight Khabib but at the end of the day, we're not interested, for now."

Mayweather hasn't fought since his 2017 victory over McGregor in Las Vegas, while Khabib beat Dustin Poirier at UFC 242 in Abu Dhabi in September.
