‘Don't understand...' - Islam Makhachev aims brutal accusation at Ian Garry after controversial UFC 330 win

Islam Makhachev has described his confusion at the kindness of Ian Machado Garry after beating him at UFC 330, reminding his opponent “this is a fight… not a game.”

The 34-year-old cemented his position as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world with his first welterweight title defence against the Irishman yesterday evening.

Makhachev won by unanimous decision against Garry, and led for the majority of the fight in Philadelphia, breaking a long-standing record in the process.

The Russian now holds the longest win streak in UFC history with 17, surpassing the 16 held by Anderson Silva, which has stood since 2013.

Makhachev managed seven unanswered takedowns, and notched up over 12 minutes of control time; Garry managed just 34 seconds but led 29 to 22 in significant strikes.

Despite bloodying the Russian, the 28-year-old was unable to convince the judges, and must now wait until his next fight to surpass Conor McGregor’s record for most UFC wins from an Irishman.

After the battle, both Makhachev and UFC president Dana White had harsh words for Garry, who they believed offered too much respect for his opponents between rounds.

The Russian, who is now targeting a 20-fight UFC win streak, offered respect to his opponent post-match, however, he also questioned his kindness.

“Honestly, I don’t understand, man. This is the fight. This is not something [where] we have to, like, hug each other every round, you know?” said Makhachev.

“We’re going to break the face, break the eye, you know? That’s why I respect all my opponents… [but] he respects too much.

“[Garry told me] ‘I fought today with the greatest fighter.’ I respect him. He’s a good guy, very kind. But this is war, look at my face. I come to beat everybody, [it’s not play].

“This is [a] fight. This is not a game,” concluded the 34-year-old.

Garry apologised to the people of Ireland and his fanbase after the fight, but vowed to return stronger.

Makhachev’s words were echoed by White, who claimed that the Irishman will look back with deep regret at this fight, as he was capable of pulling off an upset.

“I felt like the upset could happen tonight… Garry is a big, rangy, strong guy who has great takedown defence,” claimed White, who also hit out at Makhachev's 'GOAT' claim prior to the showdown.

“Ian is a talented guy. If he had even an ounce of killer instinct… in that fifth round, if he’d have been beating him to body…

“Islam’s whole right side was beaten up, his face. You don’t come out and hug, shake hands. That s*** drives me f****** crazy,” confessed the CEO.

“Come out in that fifth round with a flying knee, or something crazy. This is one of those fights Ian will go back and watch and think: ‘I wish I could do that all over again.’

‘If he came out and tried to destroy, win that last round with everything he had, it’s a totally different fight,” he concluded.
