The iconic Wimbledon trophy contains a detail that no one has managed to figure out yet.

This weekend, the Wimbledon champions will be crowned at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London.

On the women's draw, American star Amanda Anisimova, who defeated world number one Aryna Sabalenka, will take on five-time Grand Slam winner Iga Swiatek in the final on Saturday afternoon.

The pair will be battling it out on Centre Court as they bid to lift the prestigious Venus Rosewater Dish for the first time.

Meanwhile, the men's final will take place on Sunday, with the likes of Carlos Alcaraz, Taylor Fritz, Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic involved in Friday's semi-final clashes.

The winner of the men's singles will be lifting the iconic Wimbledon trophy, named the Challenge Cup.

However, there is one detail on the trophy that has left people baffled.

Situated at the top of the cup is a pineapple, which has no direct link to Wimbledon as the tournament is more known for strawberries.

On their official website, Wimbledon attempted to explain why there is a pineapple on the trophy.

They said: "Yes, it is a pineapple adorning the top of the Wimbledon gentlemen’s singles trophy, but no, no one seems to know why.

"The most plausible explanation for the presence of this unlikely fruit atop the most prestigious trophy in tennis is that, when The Championships began in the latter half of the 19th century, pineapples were prized as a rare and exclusive food."

Wimbledon added: "Although Christopher Columbus brought a pineapple back from his 1492 expedition to the New World pineapples remained expensive to import to, or grow in, western Europe, until commercial production began in Hawaii in the early 1900s. Serving them was thus an indication of high status."

Where to buy last-minute Wimbledon tickets

The Wimbledon ballot may have closed for another year, but it’s not too late to buy advance tickets if you know where to look.

If you don’t mind splashing out on the experience, Seat Unique has the option to book ‘VIP Debenture Behind The Server’ and ‘VIP Debenture Front 5 Rows’ tickets.

These tickets offer 'unparalleled views' of the court, so you won't miss out on any of the action.

As for resale tickets, you'll want to head over to StubHub and Viagogo.
