The reason why Wimbledon do not use flags to recognise six quarter finalists in the same way as other players has been revealed.

This year's Wimbledon is in full swing as all eyes are fixated on the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club with the tournament getting towards the business end.

On Tuesday, the quarter-final matches began with the likes of Carlos Alcaraz, Aryna Sabalenka, Taylor Fritz and Cameron Norrie all in action.

Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic, Iga Swiatek and Jannik Sinner will play on Wednesday.

Heading into this week's crucial matches, it has been spotted that some players do not have their country's flag and the nation's abbreviated initials next to their names on scoreboards.

Also, no flags next to their names are shown on the BBC Sport website or the Wimbledon website.

The likes of Sabalenka, Mirra Andreeva, Karen Khachanov, Liudmila Samsonova, Veronika Kudermetova and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova are the players in question.

The reason why their country's flag and initials are not shown is due to the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.

In 2022, Wimbledon banned Russian and Belarusian players from taking part in the tournament, but that was lifted in 2023.

Players from Russia and Belarus had to sign statements attesting to their neutrality and refrain from expressing support for the invasion.

In addition, the All England Club also stated that they would have to compete as neutral athletes.

Tournament director Ian Hewitt said at the time: "We continue to condemn totally Russia's illegal invasion and our wholehearted support remains with the people of Ukraine.

"This was an incredibly difficult decision, not taken lightly or without a great deal of consideration for those who will be impacted."

He added: "It is our view that, considering all factors, these are the most appropriate arrangements for The Championships for this year.

"If circumstances change materially between now and the commencement of The Championships, we will consider and respond accordingly."

Where to buy last-minute Wimbledon tickets

The Wimbledon ballot may have closed for another year, but it’s not too late to buy advance tickets if you know where to look.

If you don’t mind splashing out on the experience, Seat Unique has the option to book ‘VIP Debenture Behind The Server’ and ‘VIP Debenture Front 5 Rows’ tickets.

These tickets offer 'unparalleled views' of the court, so you won't miss out on any of the action.

As for resale tickets, you'll want to head over to StubHub and Viagogo.
