British tennis star Laura Robson was left red-faced after an embarrassing blunder live on Sky Sports during coverage of the US Open.

Robson, who was once ranked as high as 27 in the world, retired in 2022 after persistent injury troubles and has since made a successful career move to broadcasting.

The 31-year-old is currently working for Sky at the US Open in New York, along with former British no 1 Tim Henman and 18-time Grand Slam singles champion Martina Navratilova.

Robson was involved in an extremely awkward incident with fellow pundit Navratilova on Saturday, after reacting to a moment during Aryna Sabalenka's 6-3 7-6 victory over Leylah Fernandez the previous day.

During that match, a spectator at the Arthur Ashe Stadium got down on one knee and proposed to his partner. To the relief of everyone in the stadium, she accepted his proposal after the pair were shown to the crowd on the big screen.

Speaking after the match, world No 1 Sabalenka sent a message to her boyfriend after being asked about the unusual situation.

"I think it's the first time that someone proposed during my match," defending champion Sabalenka said.

"It was a very sweet moment, but I was just trying not to start smiling, because it's very cute and I believe they're super happy right now.

"I was just trying to keep focusing on my game, and it was a great moment. As I said on court, I wish them a happy marriage."

Sabalenka then added: "I looked at my boyfriend. No pressure."

When asked about the incident during Sky's coverage the following day, Robson said: "I couldn’t think of anything worse, honestly."

However, the former British no 1 failed to realise that Navratilova had proposed to her wife Julia Lemigova on the very same court back in 2014.

"I proposed to Julia on Ashe 11 years ago," Navratilova said, prompting Robson to cover her face in embarrassment.

"I'll just show myself out! I did not know that," said Robson, pretending to run off screen to the amusement of Henman.

Navratilova went on to explain: "It was during a match, they did a thing on the changeover, they showed us on the screen.

"I got down on my knee and Julia was like looking at me, I was like, 'Can you please say something? My knees are killing me.'

"She finally said yes, it took her a while though. It was a surprise."

Navratilova then attempted to put Robson at ease, adding: "Well, it was in the day session. You were talking about the night session, big difference."

Henman then added: "It's quite hot in here all of a sudden, isn't it, Laura?", with the British tennis star still left cringing from her initial faux pas.
