Alexander Zverev responds after being slammed for Trinity Rodman comment after US Open win vs Ben Shelton
Alexander Zverev won the 2026 US Open by beating Ben Shelton in the final, securing his second Grand Slam of the season.
The German lifted the French Open earlier this year, which was his first-ever Grand Slam, and he backed this up with a victory at Flushing Meadows.
While many may believe that he would have much admiration for his achievement, he has since been slammed following his comment about Shelton’s girlfriend, Trinity Rodman, but now he has responded.

Following the German tennis star's victory over Shelton in the final of the US Open, he made comments relating to the US international footballer in his victory speech.

Zverev said: “Trinity, I thought you had a game today, no? Well done to you as well. You’re the lucky charm. Not today, but usually.”
It appeared to be an attempt at humour from the 29-year-old, but he faced criticism because some believed he was taking a playful shot at Shelton and his girlfriend, as well as rubbing in the loss.
Now, the 2026 US Open champion has addressed the comments he made in his victory speech with Julia Adams.
Zverev said: “I didn't expect her to be there. When I saw her there, I was a bit surprised. From what I understand, she played the game and then came to support Ben, which is an unbelievable effort. Credit to her for doing that. I know that she's like his lucky charm. I'm sorry that it didn't work out.”
It is worth noting that Rodman has not addressed the comments that the 29-year-old made during the victory speech or accused Zverev of being disrespectful.
Alexander Zverev aiming to make history with Germany in the Davis Cup
Following the victory over Shelton at the US Open, the 29-year-old is now representing Germany in the Davis Cup.
Zverev sent Germany through to the Davis Cup Final Eight, outclassing Dino Prizmic on Sunday to secure a 3-1 victory over Croatia.
Zverev won both of his matches this weekend in straight sets and is now 55-13 on the season, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index.
The nation is aiming to win the trophy for the first time in 33 years, as they last lifted it in 1998.
Germany have won the competition on three occasions, and now with an in-form Zverev, the European nation is aiming to win its fourth. Their previous titles came in 1988, 1989, and 1993, while they finished runner-up in 1970 and 1985.
While the No. 2 player in the PIF ATP Rankings helped Germany progress to the quarter-finals, in that day’s action, Great Britain also made their way to the final eight.
