Tragedy struck at the ATP Finals on Monday as two people died in separate incidents at the season-ending tournament in Turin.

On Monday morning, a 70-year-old man fell unwell and collapsed in the Fan Village in Piazza d'Armi, which is located near the Inalpi Arena.

Emergency services swiftly arrived on the scene and transported him to the nearby Molinette Hospital, but attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.

Later on in the day, a 78-year-old man collapsed in the stands during Taylor Fritz's group stage clash against Lorenzo Musetti.

Again, emergency services responded quickly and stabilised his vital signs before transporting him to the Molinette Hospital in critical condition. He later passed away.

Tennis fans at the ATP Finals were left 'deeply shaken' by the tragedies, according to Spanish publication AS, who report a 'sombre mood' has been cast over the tournament.

As of Tuesday morning, the identities of the two men and their causes of death have yet to be confirmed.

Over the years, the ATP Finals tournament has been held in major cities around the world. This time, Jannik Sinner is the defending champion in his home country following a convincing win over Taylor Fritz in 2024.

Sinner secured his place in the next round with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Felix Auger-Aliassime, who struggled with a calf injury.

“It was very tough until 6-5 and then he had a physical issue,” said Sinner in his post-match interview. “It’s a special tournament and place for me."

Touching on his opponent's injury, Sinner said: “I hope it’s not too serious and wish him a speedy recovery and he gets back to 100% physically. You don’t want to win like this but if there’s a chance you have to use it."

He added: "It’s not nice, Félix has had some tough injuries so we wish him the best.”

Fritz, meanwhile, recorded a relatively straightforward 6-3, 6-4 victory against Lorenzo Musetti. He will come up against Carlos Alcarez on Tuesday.

“A very important one to win, I would say, if I want to make it out of the group,” Fritz said in his post-match comments.

“He (Musetti) plays quite different with the slices and everything. So it took me some time to get used to it. I was able to avoid getting broken early, then I feel like I kind of got into the match more. I thought I played really well.”
