Decision made on Nick Kyrgios suspension as tennis return date confirmed

Nick Kyrgios has accepted a one-month suspension from tennis after testing positive for cocaine this summer.

The 31-year-old failed a drug test at the ATP Tour event in Mallorca in June and was provisionally suspended for three months while an investigation took place.

The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) said Kyrgios agreed to attend an approved treatment programme, which reduced his initial suspension from three months to one month. This means his suspension is now over, after it began on 4 August 2026 and ended on 3 September 2026.

Kyrgios apologised for his actions when the provisional suspension was handed out last month, before he received a lighter penalty for his actions. He was also forced to forfeit his prize money of £5,650 from his participation in the Mallorca Open.

The ITIA review determined that the Australian's explanation that he had used cocaine “socially during a night out” was “consistent with the level of cocaine found in his sample."

Kyrgios told investigators that he used cocaine at a nightclub in Magaluf in the early hours of 20 June, two days before he played in the tournament.

It meant the sports body accepted that his use of cocaine was recreational and outside of competition, which qualified him for the lesser punishment.

“I wanted you to hear this from me first. I recently failed a drug test in Mallorca after testing positive for cocaine," wrote on Instagram at the time.

“I made a huge mistake and I take full responsibility for it. I’m sorry to my fans, my family, my sponsors and everyone close to me. Above all, I’m sorry to the kids who follow me.

“I know the example this sets and I’m deeply disappointed in myself.”

What next for Nick Kyrgios after cocaine ban?

Kyrgios was beaten by fellow Australian Adam Walton in the first round of the ATP event in Mallorca before he was banned. It was one of only four singles matches he has played this season.

The 31-year-old is currently ranked No. 919 in the world, having slipped far down the rankings since he reached the Wimbledon final in 2022. Kyrgios has struggled to stay fit amid various knee and wrist injuries, leading to questions over his immediate future in the sport. He has won only two of the eight matches he has been able to play since the start of 2023.

Speaking after he tested positive for cocaine, the divisive tennis star admitted he was nearing retirement and had struggled to accept that he was on the decline.

“My body hasn’t been able to do what my mind expects it do, and coming to terms with being near the end of my career has been harder than I ever imagined,” he said.

“At times I’ve felt hopeless and alone. However, the good news is that this has given me a wake-up call.”
