Jannik Sinner injury update issued minutes after Cincinnati Open withdrawal amid US Open scare

Jannik Sinner has been forced to withdraw from the Cincinnati Open due to a right knee injury.

The 24-year-old is the current world No.1 and was expected to compete in the Masters tournament next week in preparation for the US Open next month.

Sinner heads into the final slam of the season on the back of victory at Wimbledon, while he has also won a record five consecutive ATP Masters 1000 titles this year.

The Italian was set to be the star attraction at the upcoming event in Cincinnati, but it was announced on Sunday that he had withdrawn due to injury.

"After consulting with my doctors and my team, I have to announce that I need to withdraw from the Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati,” Sinner said. “My right knee has been bothering me and even though we have been working hard with my medical team, I have to accept that I’m not ready to compete yet.

“I’m very disappointed not to be able to play in Cincinnati and wish Bob and his whole team a great and successful event. I can’t wait to be back next year and I’m now focusing on getting ready for the US Open.”

Sinner's withdrawal raised inevitable questions about whether he would be fit to compete at the US Open, with early reports suggesting he should be able to participate.

A report from Italian outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport claimed the decision was a precautionary measure and that there are currently no fears he will miss the upcoming slam.

“The knee is not a cause for concern, so much so that in the last week Sinner has trained with high intensity on the field," the report read. "Caution would advise not to risk stress in a Masters also conditioned by high levels of temperature and humidity.”

They add that Sinner would spend another five or six days working with physiotherapist Gianluca Melegati to complete his recovery process and be fit for the US Open.

Sinner’s withdrawal from the upcoming tournament comes shortly after Carlos Alcaraz also withdrew due to his recent wrist injury. The Spaniard had hoped to mark his long-awaited return to action this month but is now a doubt for the US Open, given he hasn't played competitively since mid-April.

The Cincinnati Open main draw will begin on Thursday, 13 August, with Alexander Zverev and Novak Djokovic the star players in attendance.

Sinner has one US Open title to his name after he defeated Taylor Fritz at Flushing Meadows back in 2024. He finished runner-up in the tournament last year when he was defeated by rival Alcaraz in four sets.
