Jannik Sinner is now doing something unusual in preparation for US Open return

Jannik Sinner has turned to a non-invasive medical technique in a bid to get fit ahead of the US Open.

Sinner, who lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the final of the 2025 US Open, confirmed he would not participate in the upcoming Masters 1000 event, the Cincinnati Open, on Sunday (August 9), having previously pulled out of the Masters 1000 event in Canada to “prioritise [his] health” despite being on a six-tournament winning streak at Masters 1000 level.

Sinner pulled out of the Montreal Open due to concerns over a knee injury, with the Italian not competing since defending his Wimbledon crown against Alexander Zverev in the tournament’s final in July.

"After consulting with my doctors and my team, I have to announce that I need to withdraw from the Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati," Sinner said in a statement.

"My right knee has been bothering me and even though we have been working hard with my medical team, I have to accept that I'm not ready to compete yet.

"I'm very disappointed not to be able to play in Cincinnati and wish Bob [Moran] and his whole team a great and successful event.

"I can't wait to be back next year and I'm now focusing on getting ready for the US Open."

Jannik Sinner takes drastic action before US Open

And according to reports from Italian outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport, Sinner is taking drastic action to get fit before the final major of the season.

The outlet reports that Sinner has undergone shockwave therapy on the advice of Gianluca Melegati, a physiatrist and sports medicine specialist in Milan. The World No.1 is set to spend up to six days at the J Medical centre in Turin, where he will continue undergoing treatment.

The Italian outlet reported: “After a visit with physiotherapist Melegati in Milan, who prescribed him a course of shockwave therapy, the initial plan was to still appear in Ohio to defend the final he lost last year.

“However, day by day, the idea grew that perhaps it would be better not to rush his return but to complete the treatments and leave early for New York.

“This decision was made definitively yesterday, with the tournament being notified as per standard practice and then the announcement.

“Now, Jannik has another five, perhaps six, days in Turin at J Medical to complete his recovery and address the knee inflammation.

“The world number 1 also underwent another shockwave therapy session today, as part of the physiotherapy program prescribed in Milan, which will continue over the next few days.

“And so, after careful and not simple consideration, Cincinnati is cancelled.

“According to the staff's plans, confirmed again a few days ago, the Ohio Masters 1000 was supposed to be Sinner's first event after Wimbledon.”

According to the NHS, radial shockwave therapy (RSWT) is used to manage a variety of soft tissue and tendon issues. The treatment increases local blood circulation to reduce chronic pain in the affected area.

Meanwhile, World No.2 Alcaraz remains sidelined with a wrist injury, having not competed since April’s Barcelona Open.

The US Open runs from August 30 to September 13, with the Cincinnati event taking place between August 13 and 23.
