Fans have been reacting on social media after seeing what Jannik Sinner did following his French Open final defeat against Carlos Alcaraz.

On Sunday afternoon, Sinner and Alcaraz faced off inside Court Philippe Chatrier as the pair battled to become Roland Garros champion.

World number one Sinner looked set to clinch his maiden French Open title when he had three championship points at 5-3 in the fourth set.

However, Spaniard Alcaraz produced a monumental comeback to win 4-6, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (10-2) in five hours and 29 minutes - the longest French Open final in history.

Alcaraz also became the first man to win a major after saving championship points since 2019, when Novak Djokovic beat Roger Federer in the Wimbledon final.

After suffering his first-ever defeat in a Grand Slam final, Sinner said: "It's easier to play than talk now. I'm still happy with this trophy - I won't sleep very well tonight, but it is OK."

During the aftermath of the final, Sinner was praised on social media as he was given a guard of honour when he walked back towards the locker room.

Despite a heartbreaking defeat, the Italian still managed to smile as he said thanks for the reception he was given.

Reacting on social media, one fan said: "This was the most heartbreaking loss of his career. But he still has a smile on his face. It takes a lot of class to lose with so much grace."

Another tweeted: "Sinner lost the final but won every heart in Paris."

A third fan added: "So much class, even in this defeat. He knows he had the match in his hands and it will be very hard to digest…one thing for sure is that he always learns from his mistakes."

Someone else wrote: "Sinner gained my respect today."

A fifth commented: "He is a true champion by his demeanour."

Another fan said: "So humble - he will come back stronger."

During his victory speech, Alcaraz heaped praise on Sinner.

The 22-year-old said: "The level you have is amazing.

"It is a privilege to share a court with you in every tournament and in making history."

The next Grand Slam of the season is just around the corner, with Wimbledon starting in three weeks at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.
