Iga Swiatek credits Ariana Grande for helping her win matches at Canadian Open

Six-time Grand Slam winner Iga Swiatek has revealed that Ariana Grande played a small role in her victory over Marta Kostyuk at the Canadian Open.

Swiatek, who won Wimbledon in 2025, defeated Ukraine's Kostyuk 3-6 6-2 6-1 in what ended up being a dominant display.

The Pole won seven of her 15 break points and, at one stage, won five consecutive games to book her place in the quarter-final against Diana Shnaider.

Swiatek lost in the third round of Wimbledon to Alex Eala, and has dropped down to number eight in the WTA rankings after taking a short break from tennis after that tournament.

But the 25-year-old is now back in action and preparing for the final Grand Slam of the year, the US Open, which starts later this month.

She was one of the first players to arrive in Toronto for the tournament - and told reporters that the reasoning for that was because she had attended an Ariana Grande concert.

Additionally, Swiatek revealed that the early arrival had actually helped her adapt to conditions in Canada.

"The reason for me being early here was I went to Ariana Grande's show in Boston, and I had nothing to do after," she said.

"For sure, being early and preparing, getting through the jet lag and being able to get used to the conditions, sometimes different conditions, rainy days, dry days, sunny days... so I experienced that all in Toronto already [before the tournament] and I feel like I am ready for different kinds of situations in the match."

Of course, the Pole also took on plenty of advice from her coaches after the first set against Wimbledon semi-finalist Kostyuk, stating she received 'a few tactical tips, and it really helped me to lean on that and improve'.

"I am really grateful for that, because sometimes you cannot see everything when you are playing, and looking from a different perspective and getting that perspective for sure helps," she said.

Who is still in the Canadian Open?

Alongside Swiatek and Shnaider, ninth seed Elina Svitolina and 16th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova have also booked their spots in the quarter-final.

Alexandrova produced a surprise three-set win over top seed Aryna Sabalenka, who will remain world number one regardless of the other results in Toronto.

Alex Eala and Coco Gauff are both in action in the evening session in Toronto, with Eala's match due to get underway at around 9pm local time.

Eala and Gauff will face each other in the quarter-finals should they win their respective matches against Belinda Bencic and Alina Korneeva.
