Carlos Alcaraz Misses Chance to Create Never-Before-Seen Piece of Tennis History

Carlos Alcaraz was close to making history in the final of the 2025 US Open

Carlos Alcaraz is the 2025 US Open champion after storming to victory against Jannik Sinner in Sunday’s final at Flushing Meadows - but he missed out on a chance to create more history during his win.

Alcaraz claimed a 6-2 3-6 6-1 6-4 win over Sinner in New York, becoming world No 1 in the process.

The match, which was delayed due to increased security checks by the attendance of US President Donald Trump, was the third consecutive Grand Slam final contested between the two modern greats - with the Spaniard also winning the French Open.

World No 2 Sinner has also enjoyed an excellent 2025, having come out on top in the Australian Open and at Wimbledon.

However, there was no stopping Alcaraz in New York as he put together a string of sensational performances in the final Slam of the season.

The six-time major winner defeated Reilly Opelka, Mattia Bellucci, and Luciano Darderi in the first three rounds of the tournament.

He then followed that up by defeating Arthur Rinderknech, Jiri Lehecka, and Novak Djokovic to book his place in the final.

Winning a Grand Slam is always impressive, but the 22-year-old almost did something unprecedented at this year's US Open.

Between the first round win over Opelka and the semi-final triumph over Djokovic, Alcaraz won every set he played.

That’s 18 consecutive sets, an insane achievement when you look at the quality of his opponents.

He went into Sunday’s final with the opportunity to become the first man in the Open Era to win the US Open without dropping a single set.

The Spaniard made the perfect start, winning the opener 6-2.

However, history slipped through the world No. 1’s fingers in the second set of the final as Sinner battled back to level the match.

Alcaraz showed his class to secure a comfortable four-set victory in the end, but the damage had already been done, and his chance to make even more history had gone.

The Spaniard now has two Wimbledon titles, two US Opens, and two French Open crowns in his enviable Grand Slam collection.

He has two more Grand Slam titles than Sinner despite an impressive season from the Italian which saw him reach all four Grand Slam finals.

Meanwhile, Aryna Sabalenka was the winner of the women’s singles, beating the USA’s own Amanda Anisimova.
