Fan calls for 'Golden Ball' snooker rule change after Kyren Wilson hits incredible 147 break

Fan calls for 'Golden Ball' snooker rule change after Kyren Wilson hits incredible 147 break

One fan has called for a change.

Kyren Wilson has hit an incredible 147 maximum break during a Championship League match against Tom Ford - prompting one fan to call for an impending rule change.

'The Warrior' hit the maximum in the third frame of his best-of-five clash with Ford.

But the fifth 147 of the 32-year-old's career was anything but simple, as he began the break with two reds close to the bottom cushion, and had to play for the black positioned on the brown spot for one of his early shots.

Following a long-range pot on the yellow, Wilson then cleared up the colours to complete a stunning maximum.

You can watch every shot from the break below.

Ford eventually pulled a frame back, before Wilson won the decider to record his third victory of the group stage.

The 2021 World Championship finalist must now beat John Higgins on Wednesday to ensure he finishes in the top four places to reach the group semi-final.

From there, the winner of each of the seven groups earns entry into the Winners' Group, whereby the winner of the competition will be decided.

Wilson is the third player to hit a maximum this year, with Ding Junhui and Mark Allen both compiling a 147 at the 2024 Masters last month.

The break has brought the new 'Golden Ball' rule, which will be introduced when snooker plays its first event in Saudi Arabia next month.

A total of 10 players will compete - the world's top eight players and two wildcards.

The controversial tournament has also been accompanied by a controversial change to the sport's regulations, with the Golden Ball worth an extra 20 points if a player pots it.

There are caveats, though, with a player needing to have completed a maximum break before the Golden Ball is active in-play.

There have also been no announcements as to where on the table the Golden Ball will be placed, at what point in the frame, and whether there will be a penalty for hitting it if it is active during normal play.

And after Wilson's break, one fan commented on X (Twitter) that they wanted snooker to perform a U-turn on the 'Golden Ball': "Kyren Wilson 147. What we really need now in snooker is a chance of a Golden Ball 167. Said nobody. Ever."

As per CueTracker, there have been the same number (eight) of 147 breaks hit this season compared to the same point last season. In 2021/22, there were six maximums at this point in time.

The 2009/10 season, meanwhile, saw just two 147s, with Neil Robertson and Mark Selby hitting one each.
