Representing the British and Irish Lions is one of the highest honours a player who plays their international rugby for a home nation can achieve.

The famous red jersey has had incredible players pull it over their shoulders across the decades, but only a select few can be viewed as Lions legends.

Several players have had some special moments for the Lions, including George North, who managed to pick up Australia’s Israel Folau while in possession of the ball during a 2013 Test, an iconic image from their series victory.

North was just 21 years old when he managed this incredible showing of power, and while it feels like he did this yesterday, it may shock fans that it was 13 years ago. The recent news around the former Welsh international will make complete sense.

The now 34-year-old has taken to social media to announce his retirement from rugby following what can only be described as an incredible career littered with silverware.

He managed to lift four Six Nations championships with Wales and was part of the 2013 British and Irish Lions Test series victory over Australia.

North took to X: “Hi guys, I just want to come on here and let you know at the end of the season I will be retiring.

“For me, it is the right time. I have been able to live out my childhood dream for many seasons, playing with some of the best players, coaches and the staff behind.

“Now, I can’t thank my family, my friends and you guys enough for the support you have shown me over the years. Honestly, it’s meant the world to me.

“The next chapter, yeah, I am still working on that one, but I am excited to see where that journey takes me.

“So, again, from the bottom of my heart, thank you. Diolch.”

Sam Warburton believes rugby has found their next George North

As North announces his retirement, rugby may have already found his replacement; that is according to a former teammate of the Welsh international Sam Warburton.

Noah Caluori is already one of the best rugby players in the world, particularly aerially, and has likened his impact on the sport to a young North.

Speaking on TNT Sports, the former Lions captain said: “Not many people play the game at this age and can make such an impact.

"And I've got to think back to players like maybe George North as a teenager.

"Aerially, I haven't seen anyone as good. Maybe (Israel) Folau was similar but, already at this age, aerially one of the best guys in the world. You know, already, I think people are scared to say that. We're not saying he's a complete player just yet, but in the air, there's not many better than him.

“And for just turned 19 years of age, it's pretty impressive."
