Ireland secured a final-round victory over Scotland to put them top of the table and will now be praying that England can do them a favour in Paris against the French to hand them the Six Nations title.

Andy Farrell’s side were incredible in the first half against the Scots, with Stuart McCloskey being the key to this, allowing them to lead 19-7 at the break.

Gregor Townsend’s side did not lay down and staged a fightback in the second half, but Ireland were able to hold off this fightback and emerge with a bonus point win with a 43-21 victory.

Scotland arguably came into this game as favourites due to their performance over France last weekend, but this defeat has added to their poor recent record over Ireland, as they have now lost 12 in a row.

Ireland will now be hoping Steve Borthwick’s side can do the impossible in Le Crunch against France in Paris, in what is the 120th anniversary of this famous fixture.

However, while it is still in the hands of Fabian Galthie’s side to lift the Six Nations, Ireland can be pleased that they were able to break a record during their win over Scotland.

Ireland have now broken their own record of Triple Crowns in the Six Nations with this victory over Scotland, as they have now won nine since the addition of Italy to the championship.

England still holds the most Triple Crown titles, having won the famous trophy on 26 occasions, with Wales not too far back in second with their 22 titles.

The Irish now have 15 Triple Crowns in total, while Scotland sits at the bottom of this list with only 10, their last coming in 1990, as they failed to take their opportunity today to add to this tally.

However, since the addition of Italy to the Championship, Ireland are head and shoulders above the other Home Nations in terms of Triple Crown victories, as they have their ninth.

England and Wales are joint second with their five titles since the 2000 Six Nations, while the Scottish have failed to have the pleasure of lifting the Triple Crown during this iteration of the competition.
