Craig Bellamy to continue on as Melbourne Storm coach in 2024 despite retirement claims

It’s a complete turnaround from the 63-year-old’s claims at the beginning of the 2023 season.

Melbourne Storm coach Craig Bellamy has informed the club that he plans to continue on into 2024.

It’s a complete turnaround from the 63-year-old’s claims at the beginning of the 2023 season that this year could be his last in charge of the Melbourne side.

However, his recent admission means he will coach his 22nd season, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

Bellamy told SMH: “I’ve done a 180-degree turnaround.

“Things have got a bit testy over the past few weeks but I finally decided to coach on for another season in Melbourne.

“Eight weeks ago I was gone. Finished. But I’ve been speaking to a lot of blokes about retiring and I came to realise you are a long-time retired.”

Players were reportedly informed of the decision on Monday (May 15) morning.

Storm’s football manager Frank Ponissi, who will now go into his 16th season alongside Bellamy, said he was ‘absolutely delighted’ to continue working with the legendary coach.

Ponissi told SMH: “Last November, while we were in Glasgow visiting Ange Postecoglou at Celtic, Craig told me in confidence 2023 would be his last season.

“He was adamant. Whilst I fully respected his decision, I couldn’t understand it because he was coaching as well and as effectively as he ever has while I have been with him.

“It’s tremendous for the club that he has changed his mind.”

He informed chairman Matt Trip of his decision on Sunday evening.

Bellamy’s current contract into 2026 allows him to inform the club by round one each season whether he will continue as head coach for the following decision.

Tripp was similarly delighted to have Bellamy continue on as coach.

He said: “This is the news I’m sure everyone connected with Storm – our players and staff, our partners, and our members and fans – wanted to hear.

“His passion and desire to do the job hasn’t wavered and he is now bringing through an exciting young team here at Storm.

“Last week’s game showed Craig is up for whatever challenge is ahead and he’s clearly enjoying leading this new wave of players.”

Bellamy is largely considered one of the greatest coaches of the NRL era, having won five Premierships, albeit two being stripped.
