Contestant Wins Jackpot on Olympic Question That Stumped Everyone Else

The Wheel contestant pocketed a tidy amount of cash after the audience was left stunned.

A contestant on BBC One show The Wheel won a fortune after correctly guessing a sport-related question – but how would you fare?

The BBC One quiz show, hosted by comedian Michael McIntyre, is currently in its sixth season.

If you are unfamiliar with the show, contestants are helped by a rotation of celebrity experts when answering questions.

Each celebrity has an area of expertise, while the contestants are underneath The Wheel on a smaller wheel.

When the Contestant Wheel is spun, the person selected rises on their chair before the game begins.

One wrong answer means they are demoted back to the Contestant Wheel, meaning they could miss out on huge sums of cash.

Last Saturday’s episode (on December 6) was particularly exciting and involved celebrity guests Katherine Ryan, Leyton Williams and Roman Kemp, who all tried to help the players make the final.

A 55-year-old lollipop lady named Sally, from Gateshead, progressed to play for the hefty cash prize.

She was then paired with former England rugby player Joe Marler, who had earlier finished bottom of the table out of the celebs after getting the fewest questions correct.

Sally went for the highest prize of £110,000, and at one point, just one question remained.

“The Welsh athlete Jade Jones has won two Olympic gold medals in which martial art?” read the all-important question.

The options to choose from were: “Kickboxing, Judo, Taekwondo or Karate.”

The 55-year-old explained how she remembers Jones winning medals for “kicking” before eliminating Karate and Kickboxing from her options.

Marler then suggested that the answer was either Taekwondo or Judo before telling Sally to go with her “gut”.

And after a moment of uncertainty, the studio lit up. Sally had answered correctly and in doing so won £110,000. Jones won gold at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics.

When asked what she’d spend her winnings on, the 55-year-old explained how she wanted to buy a van to convert into a camper van to travel in with her partner, Mark.

Earlier in the show, Sally said: “And if there was a little bit left over, five years ago I was diagnosed with lung cancer, and my friends were absolutely amazing and were with me every step of the way.

“I also got the all-clear in March! So, I would love to treat them and pay them back.”

Despite winning the money, Sally also maintained that she would still work as a lollipop lady.
