Kansas City Chiefs' Travis Kelce at odds with Patrick Mahomes when it comes to 2025 season approach

Kelce is returning for his 13th season; quashing retirement talk as the Chiefs gear up to for another Super Bowl push

Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes are both at odds when it comes to their approach for the 2025 NFL season.

The Kansas City Chiefs fell to a comprehensive Super Bowl defeat earlier this year during the culmination of the 2024/25 NFL season, losing 40-22 to the Philadelphia Eagles. At one point, the Eagles were 34-0 up, with the Chiefs ultimately able to make the score more respectable.

However, failure to secure glory in Louisiana meant the Chiefs were unable to secure an unprecedented third successive Super Bowl triumph. And Mahomes was asked where the Chiefs go now having five made of the last six Super Bowls.

Speaking to Jarrett Bell of USA Today, he said: “There’s stuff we’ve got to get better at. Especially myself. There’s plays on the football field that I didn’t make last year, that I’ve made in previous years."

Mahomes added: "At the end of the day, I’m going to do whatever it takes to win, whether that’s passing for a lot of yards, not passing for a lot of yards.

“But I think if I play better, that’s going to make it better for the team. So, I’ve got to be better at executing whenever the shots are there, making those throws. Because that’s going to alleviate pressure on our defence and make them play more free and make the team play more free.”

Kelce quickly moved on from Eagles hammering

Kelce, though, took a far different approach to dealing with the loss to the Eagles in February.

“I’ve thrown that thing in the trash,” the 35-year-old, who is dating pop superstar Taylor Swift, said via ESPN’s Nate Taylor. “I’ve moved on.”

And when asked how quickly he was able to move on from the loss, Kelce was incredibly forthcoming, adding: “It happened sooner than you can imagine. I was pretty focused on this year in the offseason.”

While there were suggestions that Kelce would call it quits in the NFL after 12 years, the Chiefs star has a different look as we near the start of the 2025 season.

“He’s told people close to him that he’s lost about 25 pounds this offseason,” ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler said during a Saturday Sportcenter appearance.

“Played a little bit heavier in 2024… He vowed to change it, and he has.”

The Chiefs finished top of the AFC last season, claiming 15 wins and falling to just two defeats across the regular season. The Super Bowl runners’ up start pre-season with meetings against the Cardinals, the Seahawks and the Bears, before the regular NFL season starts against the Chargers in a month’s time.
