American football fans launch lemons onto the field after their beer snake is taken away

"If you don’t give us beer snakes, we’re going to continue to give you lemons.”

American Football fans have responded in hilarious fashion after their beer snake was confiscated.

Washington played host to an XFL game between the D.C. Defenders and Seattle Sea Dragons when fans bizarrely began launching lemons onto the field.

While those watching at home, as well as ESPN commentators, were left confused at what they were seeing it soon became apparent that there were a few disgruntled fans in attendance.

Commentators soon explained that the infamous ‘beer snake’ had become a tradition among the D.C. supporters.

A bonding experience between fans sitting in a section of a stadium where they collate a coalition of cups that snakes across multiple rows.

It’s a sight to see and a bit of fun for those involved.

But it’s been made clear in the past that security isn’t too fond of the beer snake.

And this time was no different.

Defenders fans seemingly hold their tradition in high regard, dating back to the 2020 XFL season.

So perhaps security personnel were a bit too overzealous in shutting it down so early into the season.

Not taking the snake shutdown quietly the fans certainly showed the cameras and security what they thought of the decision - evidenced by their lemon-fuelled response.

Fans told ESPN cameras, via SI: “If you don’t give us beer snakes, we’re going to continue to give you lemons.”

Perhaps, the Audi Field security will heed their warning.

I mean, they don’t want the game to turn into a sequel of Cloud With A Chance Of Meatballs - only raining lemons this time.

And it seems like plenty of XFL fans were on the side of the Defenders’ faithful.

One wrote online: “I’m in attendance and I can confirm the vibes here at Audio Field are electric enough to power the entire United States.”

Another said: “Don’t touch the beer-snake! It is already cemented in XFL history. I’m literally planning on travelling from Jersey to DC to go to a game just to be part of the beer snake. It is a right of passage.”

A third wrote: “XFL leadership needs to connect with Audi Field staff on Tuesday and make it clear, you must allow the Beer Snake. Don’t ruin fun things.”

Apparently the beer snake made its return later on in the game.
