He lived his dream.

Earlier in the week people loved the story of John Hesp, the 64-year-old who chased his dream, competing in a poker competition in Las Vegas.

Having never played with more than a buy-in of a tenner, the grandad, from East Yorkshire, ticked it off his bucket list, having paid $10,000 (£7,000) for the privilege.

It was reported that having made the final table, John would walk away with 'at least $1 million', an unbelievable feat for a complete amateur. However, it wasn't just the one million he left with, it was two. 2.6, to be exact.

"John Hesp's 4th-place for $2.6 million is the second biggest cash ever by a British player," Poker journalist Remko Rinkema posted.

Despite his win, against all the odds, he has no plans to turn professional, but will return to Bridlington and presumably spoil his seven grandchildren with presents.

"It's been quite awesome, I've been living the dream, I've loved every minute of it and I've had so much fun and entertainment," John told the BBC.

"I've wanted to do this tournament for a couple of years now, it was one of the things on my bucket list.

"I got in the top 500, then 100, then 50 and so on and it got to the point where it was indescribable, nobody could believe I could do it as an amateur.

"As I dropped below 100 it seemed quite a number of the world's media got on board and started to want to talk to me.

"I've just wanted to play some poker with some professionals.

"First of all I'd like to spoil the family a bit, my wife isn't that bothered about going away on holiday but we're quite happy to go to our humble, static caravan in the Yorkshire Dales at Pateley Bridge."

Makes you feel like a fool for losing the £20 you put on Blackjack at your local casino, doesn't it? John's seven grandchildren will certainly be happy, as there'll probably be a lot of presents coming their way.

Prior to competing he said he is 'to poker what Donald Trump is to politics - an amateur'.

"I wanted to let you all know that I am having the most surreal experience of my life," he wrote on Facebook having made it further than most of the 7,200 other players.

"Just woke after 4 hours (broken) sleep as my phones been pinging all night. It would appear that I've become an International Poker Superstar as people from all around the world are wanting to connect with me.

"All the TV people and Poker Press are wanting to interview me as I did about 5 yesterday.

"This is something I'd quite wanted to do for a while now and when I started - just hoped I could make it into the top 1000.

"I would like to thank my wife Mandy and all my family and friends back home for supporting me in this and hope that I've done them, Bridlington and East Yorkshire proud.

"I am playing again at midday in the final 27 out of over 7000 entrants from all over the world. I am truly 'living the dream'."

What a legend. Get in, John.
