Conor McGregor swiftly deletes post taking one final swipe at Dustin Poirier after UFC retirement confirmed

Conor McGregor revived his rivalry with Dustin Poirier, who retired from MMA on Saturday night.

Conor McGregor couldn't resist one final dig at rival Dustin Poirier after the American's final UFC fight - before swiftly deleting the post.

Poirier was beaten by Max Holloway in the UFC 318 main event on Saturday night by unanimous decision, before Holloway allowed Poirier the ring to lay his gloves down in his home state ahead of his retirement. Poirier was shown various farewell messages and said: "I'm just grateful that I got to live this life and go on this journey. I want to thank Dana [White] and the UFC for giving a kid the platform to make something of his life."

Regarded as one of the greatest lightweights in MMA, Poirier's 15-year career comes to an end having battled many of the sport's fellow greats - including McGregor.

Among the messages to Poirier on social media was a tribute from Jon Jones, who said: “Congratulations on an amazing career Dustin. Thank you for the years of entertainment. Now go enjoy your retirement.” Islam Makhachev posted: “Congratulations, Dustin. You’re truly one of the greatest to ever step into the cage. It was an honor and a privilege to share it with you.”

And McGregor took to social media to post a message of his own, using an old insult from back in 2014 before his first fight with Poirier.

“We love a good scrapper in the company and them two boys are just that! Scrappers!," McGregor tweeted. “Awesome stuff! Great fight lads, bravo!"

McGregor signed off the post by adding: “R.I.Pea head!" - a throwback to his 'pea head' insults of the last decade. However he would promptly delete the post to add one final piece of drama to their long-running rivalry.

The pair first fought in 2014, McGregor producing a TKO in the first round and Poirier would have to wait until 2021 for a rematch. He got his revenge with a TKO in the second round, becoming the first fighter to defeat McGregor by knockout in an MMA bout.

And the trilogy followed later that year, with a TKO in round one for Poirier to end with the better head-to-head record.
