While watching her son, Spencer Lee, attempt to win his fourth national title, Cathy couldn't let her emotions get the better of her as he son suffered an upset defeat in the semi-finals.

In the final second of the third period, Purdue's Matt Ramos pinned Spencer Lee to the mat, bringing the Iowa athlete's record 58-match winning streak to an end.

Upon seeing her son suffer an agonising defeat, Cathy instantly burst into tears and cried on another spectator's shoulder.

Other onlookers in the crowd had no other option but to watch this all unfold in disbelief.

When Bleacher Report posted a video of the incident online, fans wasted no time in wading in – many of whom criticising her reaction.

One person replied: "Bad sportsmanship. Wow but the announcers act like that’s cool."

As a third said: "Why would you be mad as a parent? He’s had 3 straight titles be proud of that, show emotion but not anger."

The clip has been viewed over 10 million times on Twitter alone with thousands more re-sharing it.

As well as his three national championships, Spencer has two Big Ten conference titles to his name.
