Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham has confirmed plans for England host of the Ryder Cup for the first time in more than 30 years.

In September last year, Team Europe won the 45th Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black in dramatic fashion following days of relentless abuse and jeering from American fans.

Following the 2025 Ryder Cup, the competition will travel to Adare Manor in County Limerick, Ireland, next year, with plans for 2029, 2031, 2033 and 2037 already confirmed.

However, as it stands, the venue for 2035 is yet to be announced, with the Ryder Cup set to take place in Europe, as Team US and Team Europe taking turns hosting the biennial competition.

Among the venues hoping to host the 2035 Ryder Cup is Bolton, as Greater Manchester mayor Burnham has announced a massive funding package to bring the biggest competition in golf back to England.

The last time that the major event was held in England was 2002, meaning that Bolton hosting in 2035 would be the first time in 33 years.

Bolton was put forward as a potential host for several other editions of the Ryder Cup, but it appears that this latest push is the most likely attempt given Burnham's confirmation of significant investment to address previous concerns.

This investment would focus on infrastructure around a new golf course, which itself will reportedly be a £240million Hulton Park resort.

Alongside the resort, the plans promise to build a new £70m M61-M6 link road.

"The success of the BRIT Awards in Manchester shows that we can we attract and deliver international events to a brilliant standard," Burnham said.

"Culture and sport will be major drivers of our good growth, and that's why we're bidding to host the biggest ever Ryder Cup in Bolton in 2035.

"We're deadly serious about it. We believe we can land [the Ryder Cup] and now it's a case of putting in a firm bid next month and hopefully a decision soon."

Southport's Tommy Fleetwood, who has won the Ryder Cup in 2018 and 2023, added that bringing "the biggest sporting event in the world" to the north-west of England would be something that the area would "remember forever".

"As a golfer, a Ryder Cup being in England, first and foremost, would be something special," Fleetwood said.

"On top of that, to do it in the north-west of England, where I'm from, would be amazing."

"We have so much to offer, the people have a lot to offer, the infrastructure has a lot to offer, and I think it would be something that would be incredible."

However, Bolton could face competition from London Golf Club in Kent and Luton Hoo in Bedfordshire, both of which are considering bids to take the mantle of the first English hosts in three decades.
