However, as the sport has evolved, they have become incredibly important to an individual's success, as they can offer precise insight and a tactical approach for golfers.

Now, in an incredible scene during a golfing tournament, a PGA Tour golfer’s caddie quit after an ugly argument, as footage has emerged.

PGA Tour golfer’s caddie quits mid-tournament after ugly argument

In a bizarre scene, a golfer’s caddie quit mid-tournament while in the middle of a round on the course at the Biltmore Championship in Asheville, North Carolina.

Footage has emerged of the scene, where Cliff Ellis removed his bib and walked off the course following a verbal exchange with Argentine golfer Alejandro Tosti.

Ellis had been Tosti’s caddie for several years in and on-off capacity, but from the footage, he appears to have reached his breaking point as the pair were on the fairway.

Video footage has since emerged of the incident, with the two engaged in a tense argument before the caddie stopped, set the golf bag down, removed his bibs and walked away.

Tosti used his initiative, asking a spectator from the gallery to step in and carry his bag for the remainder of the round, shooting a round of 71, meaning he was one over for the tournament, which ultimately meant he missed the cut for the next round.

The 30-year-old has not had the best of 2026, as he has only made the cut on four occasions from 21 starts at professional tournaments, failing to finish in the top-25 of any championship this season.

Alejandro Tosti’s response to the caddie’s exit

Following the incidents and his failure to make the cut to the next round of the Biltmore Championship, Tosti has now responded to the bizarre scene that unfolded.

The Argentine was asked to explain the incident by Golfweek, who contacted him through message, but they state that the Argentine replied ironically: “He couldn’t keep up with eight consecutive pars”. He added three laughing emojis, but did not offer an explanation for what triggered the walk-off.

Tosti has been involved in an on-course conflict previously, with it coming in 2023. The 30-year-old reportedly directed repeated insults at his then-caddie, Ray Yoel, during a Korn Ferry Tour event.

Meanwhile, in another incident in 2023, the tour removed him from the Albertsons Boise Open after the first round for a disciplinary matter.
