Kimi Antonelli broke little-known Lewis Hamilton record during Italian GP victory

Kimi Antonelli managed to beat Lewis Hamilton's record for most overtakes in a single race weekend at the Italian Grand Prix.

Antonelli won the Grand Prix in Monza despite starting in 19th place due to power unit penalties. He overtook team-mate George Russell into Ascari on lap 50, having failed to pass him at turn two on the previous lap.

The Italian managed 26 overtakes in all and surpassed the mark set by Hamilton, who completed 25 overtakes across a sprint race and race proper in Brazil in 2021.

Antonelli creates remarkable F1 history at Monza

Antonelli extended his Drivers' Championship lead to 66 points over Russell, who finished in second place. With 10 races to go, he is in full command of the destination of this year's trophy - though there is still time for his rivals to catch him up.

On the evidence of what we saw at Monza, that seems an ever decreasing possibility. Antonelli moved up to P13 by the time of Charles Leclerc's lap three crash at Parabolica, which brought out a red flag, and was up to eighth by the completion of the next racing lap.

The 20-year-old passed Hamilton, Oscar Piastri, Lando Norris and Pierre Gasly before closing up to second-placed Max Verstappen and race leader George Russell.

Antonelli would exchange places with Russell on several occasions until the Italian pitted on lap 28, with the virtual safety car allowing him to claw back the time lost to his team-mate on fresher tyres.

That paved the way for one final, pivotal overtake on lap 50, with Antonelli having already passed the 24 overtakes Hamilton managed on one of his most memorable weekends as an F1 driver.

Hamilton was sent to the back of the grid after sprint qualifying but climbed up to fifth in the sprint proper - in a time where that result decided the grid for the Grand Prix rather than an additional qualifying session.

He was then given a five-place penalty for exceeding his internal combustion engine (ICE) quota, meaning he started in 10th for Sunday's race.

Hamilton rapidly battled through the field and, after a long and controversial fight with Max Verstappen, managed to overtake the Red Bull driver for the win on lap 59 of 71 and keep his realistic championship hopes alive.

Who holds the record for most overtakes in one race?

While Hamilton managed most overtakes across a weekend, he is also believed to have jointly held the record for most overtakes in a Grand Prix too.

Although overtaking data over the years is not fully complete - there are no exactly accurate figures for overtaking up until recent years, where live action replays and driver onboards are freely available - it is believed that Hamilton's 18 overtakes at the 2016 Chinese Grand Prix had jointly held the record.

The Mercedes driver started in 22nd in Shanghai and eventually finished in P7, overtaking some cars twice as he had decided to make an early pit stop.

And Carlos Sainz produced one of his finest performances in a Ferrari when he moved up from 19th to fifth at the 2022 French Grand Prix. Charles Leclerc, meanwhile, pulled off 18 overtakes at the Russian Grand Prix in 2021.

Sebastian Vettel is recorded as having completed 16 overtakes in his rise from 20th to second at the 2019 German Grand Prix.

Max Verstappen rose from 17th to win the 2024 Brazilian Grand Prix, with his overtaking count marked down as 10 for that particular race.
