F1 fans spot worrying detail on Oscar Piastri's onboard before Charles Leclerc crash

Eagle-eyed fans believe they’ve spotted the cause of Charles Leclerc’s crash-out at the Italian Grand Prix.

The red flag was brought out at Monza after just two laps, with the Ferrari driver crashing out while defending his fourth position from McLaren’s Oscar Piastri.

Leclerc lost the rear of his Ferrari, despite the car appearing stable until late on during the corner, as the 28-year-old experienced snap oversteer.

Footage from Piastri’s onboard appears to show the Ferrari driver touching the drainage grill, which fans believe caused Leclerc’s crash at Monza.

Aftermath of Leclerc’s crash-out at Italian GP

The 28-year-old walked away unhurt from the crash, even after his car spun in the outside barriers at high speeds.

Ralf Schumacher also reported via Sky Germany that Leclerc’s Ferrari sounded strange from the onboard, for just a small fraction of time before the driver lost control.

Leclerc began his race by aggravating his own team-mate, Lewis Hamilton, with the seven-time Champion claiming: “Charles pushed me off,” on the team radio.

Merely two laps in, a safety car had to be replaced with a red flag, so that safety officials could repair the barriers at Leclerc’s crash site — a torrid state of affairs for Ferrari in their home race.

The 28-year-old was taken to the medical centre to undergo precautionary tests, but was cleared of immediate injury and released shortly after.

However, the Ferrari driver later clarified that he will receive additional checks, to be “better safe than sorry” ahead of next weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix.

“The neck was ok… [but] the right eye was not showing me great vision,” confessed Leclerc, following the crash. “Now it's all good, but that's the thing I was most worried about.”

The 28-year-old continued: “There’s a bit of pain here and there, which is normal after a crash like this. I think I'll have quite a few additional checks that we still have to do on my side, probably tonight and tomorrow, to make sure that I'll be fully fine for Madrid.”

Beyond personal injury, his antics in derailing Hamilton demoted the Englishman to eighth — the race restarted shortly after 3pm BST, with Ferrari seriously impacted.

Fans react to Leclerc’s crash at Monza

Some Formula 1 viewers were less than empathetic to Leclerc’s situation, accusing the driver’s fans of looking too deeply into his interaction with the drainage grill.

“Always an excuse with you people. He was the only person to crash himself off, yet there is always an excuse,” one wrote. “You can’t seriously be defending this,” another added.

Fans of the Ferrari driver claimed otherwise, invoking commentary made via Canal in which Leclerc’s crash was theorised to be the result of an ‘unexpected burst of energy.’
